Curious what fertilizer y'all use on a newly established food plot that is 4-6 weeks old with growth? I used triple 13 mixed in when I planted, but know I need to fertilize again, just not sure what to use.

if needed wait till about 60 days out and add a dose of urea, but really should not need any if you put a good dose of 13 13 13, but my gosh your plots are already 4-6 weeks old? where at? seems it would be potential trouble with army worms and very mature and less palatable in the winter? Just curious what you planted and where and how that has worked in the past?

We usually hit with 33-0-0 after a few weeks after planting. It usually depends on the weather if we do it or not.

What did you plant? A legume like clover is going to have way different nutrient requirements as opposed to a cereal grain or a brassica.

Yeah thats the thing... I planted a mix of both of those. Plot spike with forage oats, smaller grains, premium forage rape, clover, and Austrian winter peas.

Since that is the case, I'm thinking I don't want to use anything with too high of Nitrogen because of the legumes.

First week of October for me.

I"m not even sure the ground will be dry enough to even plant by then with all the rain the past couple of weeks.

The small amount of legumes in a mix is not enough to fix the nitrogen in the soil. A second application is not necessary, but if applied right before a rain has seemed to help our plots.

Better be watching for army worms if you are in the Southeast.

No one and I mean no one can recommend fertilizer without a soil test.

Always a good idea, but come on, top dressing with nitrogen? I think he will be okay to do that,
Also with the mixture he has planted (legumes, clover, forage greens) going to be hard to nail down a specific fertilizer blend that will be optimal for everything and will end up coming back with a complete fertilizer anyway?? A soil test will be great for keeping up with the PH but that ship has sailed for this crop???

Oh it won’t hurt anything but it also won’t do shite either. I came across a spreadsheet one time created by a professor in Tennessee that showed for every tenth of a pH off from 6.5-7.0, (X) lbs of fertilizer is completely wasted.

I spent 9 hours Saturday in a "food plot seminar". The guy was kind of a blow hard. But he had some good information. He probably said "soil test" 25 times over the course of the day.

In general he wasn't a big fan of complex seed mixes. Mostly for the obvious reasons that you can't manage crop protection and nutrition needs for different species at the same time.

But some plants compliment each other pretty well. The old school combination of wheat, crimson clover, and arrowleaf clover is hard to beat. Lime and fertilize according to soil test.

Top dressing with nitrogen won’t do shite??? Come on

Yes PH is very important, but he ain’t changing the ph of his plots at this point in the game for this year, hell he planted 4 weeks ago
