Best fishfinder around the $300 mark

I'm not really familiar with fishfinders, but I'm in the market for a fairly inexpensive rig. What's the OB's opinion on the best setup in that price range?

What do you want to do with it?

Just basic fish location, depth, and maybe some GPS. I'm not doing anything hardcore.

I recently upgraded and now I have a lowarnce that I need to get rid of. Post your email and I’ll send you some pics tomorrow.

Well, Humminbird has the Helix 5 and Garmin has the striker 5 that you can get for $300... The Helix 7 and Garmin Striker 7 are far superior units that can be had under $500 on sale. Some people like the Lowrance Hook but I don't. The middle of the road and high end Lowrance stuff is good but way out of your range. I would personally stretch the budget to get a Helix 7 with side imaging because that is what would be most useful to what I fish. If you are 100% shallow marsh fishing imaging becomes less important and GPS function becomes oh so much more important. Even the top of the line, highest resolution mega imaging doesn't help for crap in a redfish pond.
I personally use GPS and side scan the most, but I have mega imaging in a solix 10. You don't really see fish unless you just get really lucky but you can definitely see their shadows and schools. Occasionally mega imaging picks up life like views of fish but mostly you can see branches, rigs, debris, etc. and just a little black blobs next to structure that are the fish.

Turns out Garmin has a sub $400 model of the striker 7 with side imaging, it isn't as good as humminbird mega imaging but will work just fine, if that can fit your budget it is way better than the 5" units.

I was just looking at a Garmin Striker Vivid 7cv that's $399. How's the quality of Garmin products?

FYI, a map card alone can be 300 bucks..
Graphs don't come preloaded with great maps. And satellite overlay maps are different that lake maps

Model/year/price?

Looks like I can get a Lowrance Hook Reveal 7 for the same price as a Garmin. Is there a better choice between the two or are they pretty much the same?

Every time cheap graphs come up its the same discussion. Hooks are cheap cause they are junk for mapping. They do well for sonar but not for mapping.

I have a Hook 7 and 9 tripleshot on my rig and love both.
Edit: I don't use them for mapping but both have the capability.

Thanks. I'm probably not going to use the mapping feature other than preventing myself from getting lost.

If you want overlay satellite imagery don't get a hook. I feel like this should be stickied.

I run 2 hummingbird 5” screen with chirp on my small aluminum boat. I think I paid $299.
I like the mapping on Toledo Bend.
Around here I run a vexilar color flasher on the front. I’m looking for hard or soft bottom. Deep lakes which around here is okissha if I’m lazy I keep the flasher on the front looking for underwater grass.

Cabela's has a Garmin ECHOMAP UHD 73sv Fish Finder/Chartplotter Combo on sale for $450
Is this one worth the deal?

I cannot say if it's worth that, but I can say that the Echomap UHDs are quality machines that do nothing poorly. They are so good that I ditched a second unit on the bow, and rarely turn on my Carbon 9 at the helm. Echomap UHDs at both spots.
