I’m looking to go crabbing this summer, but not sure where the best place to go would be. Any tips and advice would be appreciated too, since it’s my first time.

Go EARLY. Like daylight early.

It’s cooler, less crowded and crabs are more active shallow.

After 10 or so it’s just miserable

Depends on where you live. Grand isle down to fourchon has crabs off the side of the road, but plenty of places towards lake charles do as well.

There is a refuge over there that has a weir and a shell road you drive down to get there. I have not been but have heard stories. Ask around for it.

Sabine National Wildlife Refuge (Hackberry area - on the highway going to Holly Beach) has several piers in the marsh where you can crab and fish.

It's nice because you park right next to the pier.

They usually start running on the beaches in Grand Isle in July. Have caught many ice chests full on the beach.

Can run set nets in the surf or a line with stagings.

If they aren’t catching during the day. Go at night with a good light and dip net and you can scoop them up coming in with the tide.

Has miniature crabs. Rockefeller and Rollover but you need to go by boat if you want to increase your chances of catching large crabs.

I haven't gone yet this year but I have heard crabbing has not been good so far. Supposedly, the drought last year got the salinity way up in the marshes and killed of a lot of the nurseries.

I took the kids Thursday and we caught a whole bunch of little ones. After much culling we ended up with a basket full mediums at Rockefeller. We got there at 1:30 and left at 4. We were using small bass (under 8 inches) culled from my pond. We had to shake the crabs off of them. I ran few pieces of chicken the neighbors left and I had to sneak up on the crabs, or they would let go.

There is a road on the east side of the ship channel by the ferry that that goes north along the ship channel. Plenty people crab along this road at the abandoned service company sites. Rockafella is a trash fest of tattoos and baby mamas from west Crowley, Sabine spots are over fished with tattoos and baby mamas.

Yup. They have to close it down regularly to pick up all the trash strewn around by folks. Used to crab at Hog Island Gully all the time and there were always sketchy people out there.

I know the best place ever, but I'm not giving up my spot. Limit out at 12 dozen every time is the biggest hint you're going to get.
