I’m leaning towards the Savage Arms 410 crack barrel with 26” and choke. Bottomlands pattern

I've got a Remington 870 Super Mag that's a turkey setup with a pistol grip and choke, ready to go out of the box.

That being said, I bought my little boys a Stevens single shot 410 for when they get old enough, I started using it with TSS after I shot two last year with the 12 gauge. I might end up having to buy the boys a replacement when I keep their 410

Haha I’ve been doing a lot of research, and if you’re calling them in/ stalking, the 410 is more than enough for a shot at 50 yards or less. Especially with the choke. A lot of turkey hunters are using it now. Best part, it’s $225

So I have this ancient Mossberg bolt action .410 that forever has been pretty much a family keepsake.

But, from what I understand this new TSS ammo could turn it into a superb turkey getter.

Look at the number of pellets in a 410 vs 20 or 12. Even with TSS the difference is significant. The guys that are patterning a 410 for putting max pellets in a circle at 40 or 50 yards are shooting extremely tight constriction. You won't find someone who routinely kills a lot of turkeys that says shoot less pellets. The ideal turkey gun/choke combo will not be extremely tight. You'll miss a bunch of turkeys at 10-15yds with too tight of a choke. You have to balance forgiveness along with pattern density.

In regard to the cost, an old beatup pawn shop 870 with a proper choke and TSS will kill all of the turkeys a 410 with a super tight constriction will plus about 25% more.

My main turkey gun is a remington 1187 youth with a thumb hole stock, burris ff3 and carlsons tss choke.
My secondary is the savage 301 turkey bottomland) in .410 (bought it for my kids but I love it).
I will never shoot a 12 again for turkeys.

The one thing I did a few times as a kid that I never picked up long term and wished I would have kept at it was turkey hunting. Back then it was 870s with short barrels. After opening this thread, I was looking at turkey guns online and there are a shite ton of newer styled guns and things these days. Idk where to begin.

I may strongly consider the 410 to have my kids use and use for some squirrels. But is it really worth it for turkeys? Why not go 20 gauge?

There's some rare times I wish my gun was smaller but a good sling and it never really bothers me.

As said well above, the issue with turkey chokes and the tight constriction is that you really need to have a chosen range within 10-15 yards. They don't do well under or over that range.

Now, I much prefer to hunt with someone. So I could see one guy having a 410 for close in and another a 12 gauge for open areas where birds are more likely to hang up.

My 20ga 870 express magnum with 21" barrel and .570 choke is good to 30 yds with most lead shot. This will be my first year hunting with Winchester longbeard. Haven't patterned it yet, but if it doesn't get me out to 40 yds I'll be investing in a choke that can shoot TSS.

What do you do for a sight?

Brass bead has worked just fine for me but I’ve got a new choke on my desk and want to tinker. Had my eye on a gobble dot since I don’t care to jump to a red dot, and it can be adjusted for POI. Anything else out there worth a look?

Having been hunting them since 1984, the good ole days, i would say do not over think the shotgun. Put far more time in figuring on how to overcome the other hunters from running up on your set up. Far too much thinking on the shotgun. One of my ole St Helena parish mentors used a duct taped stock Rem 11, no special choke back then. He had shoe boxes full of beards. Only used a set of yelps sparingly on a friction call.

Today , i use the Encore 12 gauge, #4211 vent rib barrel, comp-n- choke, and Long beard #5 shot .

Put far more time out there being with the birds before season, learning mid morning habits, and forget all that racket noise you see on tv. Don't do that.

south texas open area has turkey in the 100-150 yard range. I use a browning 223 and Leupol scope for head shots.

I shoot a benelli nova and just shoot the beads it came with. I bought my kids a franchi affinity last year and it killled 3 longbeards with just the beads. I know some people like putting an optic on a shotgun, but I have never been in a situation where I needed one. I have however been in plenty situations where I’d have knocked one off or had it covered in mud.

The lightest, shortest, cheapest single shot 12 ga you can find.

Next is his little brother, 20 ga.

I have both in NE firearm. The 12 has original green camo from the 80s. 20 ga has the original realtree, which Bill Jordan should have stopped there.

Loud and clear and bout what I figured. When I’ve pulled the trigger I needed to put barrel on black quick.

They had an awesome little Mossberg Camo .410 that was semi auto at the shop. It was super light and had some tru glo type ring sights. I didn't realize until this thread that people were using .410 for turkeys but that would be an awesome little gun for that.

This is how I feel. If I can't see him well enough to shoot him with just the beads, probably don't need to be taking the shot anyway
