In the past I have noticed a thread on the Big Branch NWR but I did not find much doing a serach.
Are any of y'all hunting in there or have input? This will be my first year in there and scoped out a spot near the South West part. How heavily hunted is it these days. I'm looking to put meat in the freezer so a mature doe or a hog would suit just fine. This will be more about hunting with my girlfriend. She has a kill under her belt already and wants to hunt in the same tree for a few hunts.

I'll be hunting there for the first time this year as well. I love chasing big deer but for big branch, I'm just looking to kill a deer this year. I'm excited for the challenge.

What region are you going to try to hunt? I want to scout one more spot before I go hang a stand at the end of the month.

Unsure really, going to play it by ear

I have one but I don't plan on using it too much. I will hunt from the ground and use a make-shift tree saddle most likely

I plan to hang lock ons for me and the girl friend. I hope they aren't stolen because I plan to leave them til the end of season.
I also will be helping a buddy hang a 15' ladder stand and will be hunting it as well.

I'm pretty sure permanent stands are not allowed on NWR's... just FYI

ETA: nevermind

quote:

Hunters may erect temporary deer stands 48 hours prior to the start of deer archery season. Hunters must remove all deer stands within 48 hours after the archery season closes. Hunters may place only one deer stand on the Refuge. Deer stands must have owner’s state license/sportman’s identification number clearly printed on the stand. All untagged stands are subject to seizure.

Yea I've done my research for hunting in there, I'm really looking forward to slinging aarows and dragging somethi bg out of there all while spending some of the best quality time a couple can spend together as long as you can keep your woman quiet long enough to see something

Where else is the public parking besides the outdoor learning center on the west side? I do not see the parking like the NWR map shows.

When I've been all the way on the west side, I just park where the road dead ends past that outdoor learning center. Plus most of the roads through the western part of Big Branch have such little traffic besides hunters, I see people parked on the side of the road all the time.

There's a few trails along Paquet Rd that have parking areas at the trail entrance.

Parking at the kayak/canoe launch at the end of Sapsucker Rd.

Thanks man. I really was not sure if I would get towed parking off the road. There is no shoulders so I dunno how I feel about that. Although there are some killer areas that I would love to hunt but parking has been an issue.

How heavily hunted is BBM? Being all bow I would not imagine it stays packed after rifle opens.

I've seen people park along the side of Bremermann Rd plenty of times. There's so little traffic that I don't think you'll have any issues as long as you're off to the side as much as you can get.

I ain't promising you won't get towed, but as long as you're off to the side enough to allow other trucks to be able to get by then I'd highly doubt a warden would have you towed on a road with so little traffic besides the hunters.

I'll usually see a couple other trucks along Paquet Rd parking areas when I hunt that area, but for the most part pretty lightly pressured, especially compared to places like Pearl River WMA

Have you noticed any discrepancies between good earth boundaries and the BBM map off of this road? I'm talking like 1/4 mile difference between the NWR and private land. I don't know which to go by.

I want to talk to one of the game wardens out there to make sure I am in compliance with all the NWR rules, but is there anything specific in addition to normal rules I need to make sure I dont forget?

Like I can shoot a hog during deer season I'm pretty sure

Need to have the NWR license on me

Can I field dress the deer out there? Anything weird?

Yes you can

You can't go out to hog hunt but you can kill them while hunting other things that are in season
