Not sure if this article has been posted here or not. It's by Greg Ellifritz (published in his blog dated today): LINK

Lots of folks have strong feelings about this topic, and might disagree with the author's recommendation. Please remember that I'm not the author.

Still, better odds for hitting something 50 feet away with a shotgun than with a pistol for 90% of the general public.

Buckshot (all types)- 54% of shots led to an immediate incapacitation

Rifled Slugs- 67% of shots led to an immediate incapacitation

I feel like most on here would not be shocked at these findings.

I saw someone take a shot of 12ga 7.5 to the midsection. It wasnt pretty and they werent worried about moving I can tell you that. It was from a pretty close range... which 50' is a long arse shot for a shotgun.

Except I’d expect about 100% for slugs and 99% for buckshot

Paul Harrell did a segment on this where he used his "meat target" to estimate damage. I would not want to do much after taking birdshot at close range.

Not with today's ammo. It's obviously hard to find right now, but Federal's "Premium LE" Reduced Recoil 8 pellet 00 buckshot with their FliteControl wad patterns pretty tightly.

I patterned some in my Beretta A400 (sporting clays gun) with a modified choke:
At 10 yards the pattern size was 2 inches
At 15 feet the pattern size was 4.5 inches
At 50 yards 7 out of 8 pellets hit an IDPA target

I'm sure different shotguns and/or different chokes would yield different results - but I keep a mod. choke in my A400, so I wanted to know what it would do in my gun.

Apparently cylinder or IC chokes actually produce tighter patterns in some guns with this ammo - from what I've read the pellets stay in the wad/cup longer with a more open choke.

My 12 gauge is loaded slug/slug/slug/buckshot/buckshot

I'm sure I will be told I am wrong but my thought process is I have 3 shots to end the threat immediately and 2 last shots to spray and pray

Before getting my AR, I often wondered which of my long guns I’d grab first if needed in a hurry. I don’t hunt and don’t enjoy shooting my 12ga so all I have is a bunch of steel birdshot someone gave me. At 17% incapacitation, after the AR, I’ll just grab my .308 rifle. It’ll stop a person.

The 1911 will get me the 6ft to the vepr.

The Vepr has 20 rounds of OO.

There isn't a predator in the world that 20 rounds of OO cant stop.

Even an actual PREDATOR would take note

Im not sure what is controversial about this. Buckshot vs bird shot on dropping a large animal. People need to research this?

I can't find buckshot, so 7.5s will have to do. And will make a screaming bloody mess all the same. Im not going to lose sleep over it, and nobody else should either.

Never gonna argue against a .308.
I had an AR-10 that was one of the most accurate rifles I ever shot.

In my case I'd grab a handgun first, since it'll be right there in the nightstand. If I have enough warning to allow me to safely go looking for a long gun, I'd prefer the A400 because I have literally thousands of repetitions mounting and shooting that particular shotgun.

Plus, the Reduced Recoil 8 pellet 00 ammo from Federal has less recoil than the target loads I shoot at clays.

I would not choose birdshot as my main home defense round. Having said that, if I knew I could get to it fast, I would not hesitate because:

quote:

Birdshot pattern at 10 feet. This will probably do the job.

In my house, the ranges I would be to the intruder would never be:
quote:

The same load at 50 feet isn’t likely to be as effective.

That is a nasty round.

It has near zero recoil and very low noise out of a gas semi auto. Its really great stuff. Great patterns from open chokes too. Its the tits for home defense IMO.
