Can I rent the equipment to do myself? I'm removing all the old insulation due to a pretty bad rat/mouse problem. So far I've gotten 1 quote and it was much higher than I anticipated. I've bit off a lot with this older house and would love to hire someone to do but I can't justify the cost I was quoted. So looking at possibly spray in myself.

Guessing you mean cellulose? Don't go wild and don't cover recessed lights or heat/light/vents. You will probably have to clear around any bath vents exhaust too.
It'll also add to any and all add ons due to having to wade through and locate areas.

Lowes/Home Depot will let you use the insulation blower for free if you buy XX number of bags of insulation.

Did 800SF 12" deep in 90 minutes, 2 people, 1 filling the machine, 1 shooting. Easy

Good to know. I will go this route, currently i have a quote from Dugas to remove the insulation and spray the area. I will be calling other pest control places today. Are there any contractors i should reach out to for a quote? Or are pest control companies the only ones who deal with this type of stuff?

Treat and kill the rats way before. Pest control company would be best. Leave old insulation and blow in new on top. Do wear dust mask.

It's a scam to pay someone else to do it. Takes like 60-90 mins per 1000sq ft depending on your access, as said all you do is feed it into the machine and it blows it where you need it. It's like buy 10 bags for $35/ each and get the machine for free at HD. I got two quotes and they wanted like $1800 for literally the same equipment, I was going to pay about $500 for someone else. I laughed at the guy on the phone when I asked him why it costs so much.

did this at my old house. I think if you buy a minimum of 20 bags they give you the machine. I was in the attic and my neighbor fed the machine. I believe as others stated it took no longer than 2 hours.

important question here. Are you talking about doing your attic?

Are you talking about the insulation they sell and rent the machines for at Home Depot will work for you.

If not, if you're talking about doing your exterior walls before putting sheetrock up then you will either have to go with regular ole batt insulation or spray in closed cell insulation.

This sounds like a horrible idea. I am having a pest control company take care of the rat problem. IMO the old insulation must come out. It can not be healthy to have old rat droppings and piss in your attic. I would not feel comfortable bringing in a new born home to this.

These guys are proud of their insulation removal vacuums. I got two quotes to rent it for a day and both were $600+. I will probably spend around $1,500 to do it myself or $4,000 to have someone else do it. I'll do it myself for that difference, haha.

Yeah $280 just for the machine. Then they tack on all kinds of shite. They said I had to use their bags and to get enough hose to reach my entire attic. I can probably find some cheaper bags. They wanted $40 a fricking bag. It was some cloth breathable bag.

ahh, well. I can see charging a little bit more but that is some fricked up pricing when they make you use other stuff they rent in order for the machine to operate properly.

I blew mine in on top of the old insulation in my old house. The old insulation was blown in as well, but less than 6" or so. I put another 6-8" in (that's what she said). Was painless. Like others said, one man down below feeding the bales of insulation into the machine, one man in the attic. I bought more than I needed, and returned the extra to HD. I can't remember how much I bought, but it all fit on a 5x12 trailer.

Make sure to be conscious around your HVAC equipment, vent pipes, stove vents, soffits, etc. Do a little recon of everywhere you are going to spray before getting up there. Once it starts flying, you won't be able to stop and rethink things. Put a marker of some sort at the desired depth, so you'll know when you get enough blown in. Wear a mask, or you'll have black boogers and cough up black stuff for a week.

I wish I could blow in on top of what I already have but the old stuff needs to come out. I know the house had a bad rat/mouse problem at one point. We have killed one big rat inside already. I pulled some baseboards off the other day and piles of rat shite came out. I have peaked around the attic and found old rat traps where someone had tried to get rid of them. I'm kinda scared to see what I find when I start taking out insulation. I swear to god if I come across a rat snake when I'm up there I will burn that bitch down.

Nearly everyone in this thread has a mouse in their attic, unless they have rat snakes up there.

If you find a rat snake let me know. I need one in my attic.
