Boston Whaler for freshwater fishing

One of my podnuhs is selling his Boston Whaler 13 Standard. I believe it's a 60's model, good condition. I've become fed up with my current set up and was considering buying a new alweld 14 when this much cheaper deal was offered to me. I have a 25 hp and a jack plate to slap on it. I fish mostly bayous with the occasional freshwater marsh trip. This boat would also be used for deer/hog hunting.
Are they they pretty tough boats?
Will they work well for bayou fishing/hunting?
Any reasons not to go with the whaler?
Looks similar to this, without the console. My main concern is that it would be pretty uncomfortable to bass/bream fish in.

You're looking at a 60yr old boat that's in good condition. Yeah. They're the closest thing to indestructible fiberglass boats.

It's gonna be more comfortable and better laid out than a canoe, but not as comfortable as a skeeter bass boat. You'll likely have to do some work to get it setup on the inside, to make it comfortable for pitching tube jigs under cypress trees.

I'm used to being pretty uncomfortable when fishing. Part of the reason I'm fed up with my current set up is it being uncomfortable. My big hang up is that I'm tired of always having second hand equipment. I'm pretty frugal. The attractive thing about this is saving money but is this going to end up being one of those deals where if I fish a weekend I have to spend the next weekend fixing all my shite before I can go fishing again. It's gonna be like pulling nails to buy a new boat but once I forget about the money spent I'd likely be happier about it.

I had a 16’ that I absolutely loved. Fished lake pontchartrain regularly and got caught a couple times in kick up thunderstorms. Boat never blinked. Used it in fresh and salt with no issues. I agree you may need to set it up as you’d like but the boat itself won’t give you any issues. And I’m not saying to disregard the suggested weight limits but I carried twice the limit a couple times and it sat damn near as high when it was just empty.

New boats need loving also...all boats are worse than women..if they ain't getting the attention they feel they are entitled to they will break your heart. There ain't no perfect boat nor woman....best to have several of both at your disposal...but far easier with boats than women.
It sounds like you have already decided to buy a new one...the whole forgetting about the money thing is indicative of this....and I know exactly where you are coming from. That said a Whaler is as good a production hull as has ever been made and the one you are describing will do anything you want it to do for years to come. It will no doubt need some tweaking to make it work for you but all of them, even a shiny new one, will have things you'll want to change. I've owned several whalers and they were all great boats.

I grew up on a 13 whaler. Fished salt water bayous mostly. Loved that boat!!
I only brought it to Laccassine once (freshwater) but the grass and lillies in the small trails ate my lunch with it. But it was comfy to fish out of for me (as a teenager at the time)
Where is the one for sale? I know someone who might be interested if you don’t take it.

Damn, this would be a problem.

It's a buddy in Alabama. He hasn't listed it, he's been toying with the idea of getting rid of it. He's had it a long time so I think it has some sentiments tied up in it. I'll let him know.

If you stay in the boat channels and flats, you should be fine. You just have to learn (or get used to, I should say) that some times your trolling motor wont keep up with the combo of wind and grass. But you can usually set up so that it blows you in the direction you want to go.
I've been fishing Lacassine for about 3 or 4 years now, and have been with motors as small as a 9.8HP to now a 40HP. You should never have an issue in the boat channels (where I've caught the majority of my fish) or flats with any size motor. But if you plan to fish there, you may want to oversize your trolling motor. I just got a 55lb 12v trolling motor, but I haven't been out there yet with it.
Also, its brackish, not fresh water. I rinse EVERYTHING down (from reels to trailer) and run the motor on muffs for a while after every trip. If you go there, I recommend a traveling boat cover so that everything in your boat doesn't get covered in white dust on the 4 mile white dirt road heading to the launch.

Dang, that's news to me. I've been fishing it for 5 or 6 years now, makes sense as to why my trailer is rusting out.

what's your biggest fish out of the channels? Just curious, I have a theory about that place.

My personal biggest is only 4lbs. The biggest out of my boat was 5lbs.
My old football coach fishes there multiple times EVERY week. He's caught more 8ish pounders than I can count. and so far this years he's caught probably three 6 pounders and a 7+ pounder. Hes constantly sending me pictures to rub it in my face.

The Boston whaler montauk series are great inshore boats. Rich man joe boats imo. Fished out of a 17 with a 90 for many years. They can pound in a chop but will take bigger water than you care to be in plus the piece of mind of never going to the bottom if swamped. My first boat was a 9’ whaler when I was 10 yrs old I still have it 30 years later and my kids and I use it to fish the pond behind our house. If you can get a good deal I see no reason not to buy a whaler although the 13 is a bit small and a two man boat at most

I've never caught a really big fish out of the channels. I catch my numbers there but only one that went over 5 lbs. I have a couple of fishing buddies who normally have the same experience but one hauled a 9 lber out of a channel. I think big fish could be anywhere in that place but when it gets hot they are buried up in the thick stuff.
I fished it almost every weekend last year and I think I'm done for the year there already. I'm tired of fighting the crowds.

I really believe its more of a lure choice. He fishes different lures than I do. He may get less bites than I do, but he typically catches bigger fish. And thats my problem, I like to get a lot of action, even if its not bigguns. I haven't been able to have any days this year where its on fire, but my mind set is once I've had enough action, I would switch to the lures that he tends to catch the bigger ones on. But I've been struggling for anything out there this year.

I'm wondering if it has something to do with how much more pressure there is this year. Also, I've noticed there was a lot more grass early this year and last than years past. I think it might be the mild winters not killing as much.

I don't know. Last year the grass seemed thicker than the year before, too. The added pressure surely isn't helping. The first trip I made this year was the day after it opened. We went a little after lunch, and luckily someone was picking up their boat and I got a parking spot right near the launch, because there were trucks and trailers parked a mile down the road from the launch.

I'm about done with that place. I might make 1 or 2 trips a year now but with the amount of attention it has gotten lately it is only going to get worse. There's a lot of good guys who fish out there but the flatbill crowd is moving in.

Yeah, I am going to try to find some spots for reds so that I have other places to fish. I just moved to LC in 2019 and was working 6 days a week up until February, so I still haven't tried many areas. I don't really even know where to start
I tried West Cove Canal once, and caught a few, but that was actually before I even moved here.

There's a Kayak fisherman on instagram, @cajun_kahuna_outdoors, who has been smashing the fish there lately. he usually posts his general location on there. I grew up fishing that area but I haven't lived there in over 10 years so any of my info would be dated. Used to do well in Black Lake before they leveed off a portion of it.

It was more of my old azz 25HP Johnson that was on the back of it than the hull. It didn't have the "release" that would pop up when I hit something or the engine got clogged.

You would launch by the bridge to get into Black Lake? I guess I just need to find a bunch of different places to launch where the water is deep enough, and start trying each one every weekend.
