Bright orange flares over ocean

I am at ocean isle beach tonight, between Wilmington and myrtle beach.
Miles out, i saw three planes way up, with beacons flashing flying in a triangle formation. At the same time, They would all three drop some kind of magnesium countermeasure or flare. The. About ten min later they would separate and drop flares again but at the same time.
Under all of this, four or five miles out, There was a helicopter that was flying what looked like 30 feet over the water.....so I bet it was realistically 500 feet since I don’t see anything like this at him.
Anyone know what kind of exercise this is? I’m just genuinely interested in your stories if you flew them.
I saw c130s and c17 flying earlier today and a loud arse f18 ( all black) flew over within an hour of each other

I didn't believe you on the black F-18 until I googled it. Seems the Navy's version of the USAF's Aggressor squadron has a dark grey F-18 painted so that it resembles one of the Su-30 Flanker's color schemes.. Did it have a white nose? That would be a dead giveaway.
As for the training I have no clue, except just countermeasure flares to spoof IR missile shots.

Don't know about your case but most of the ocean along the Florida Panhandle is part of a Eglin AFB test range. When I moved here I thought I saw a few very impressive shooting stars on the horizon. My neighbor laughed and told me they were navy missile tests. He was right.

I’m really interested in what the orange flares are and what kind of plane deploys them.

Not know to that many, but the seals have a "Super Secret" training base in NC at Harvey Point. Where they practiced the Bin Laden raid.
But most likely, given the area, it was Marines out of Camp Lejeune/Cherry Point.
