Browning X-Bolt vs. A-Bolt

What's the major differences?

X bolt is pretty much an updated Abolt...adjustable trigger, can open the bolt while safety is on, and I believe it's a little smaller and lighter

Dont know but I have an A bolt 7mm mag and it has performed flawlessly

For what it is worth...my gunsmith(builds custom rifles and has forgotten more than most will ever learn) told me that the x-bolt is vastly INFERIOR to the a-bolt. He is an accuracy fanatic and claims that the x-bolt can not compare to the a-bolt. He told to buy a-bolt only.

Ive heard that too but I've shot them both and the xbolt held its own

I've had my 30-06 A-Bolt for years now and i love it.

That is my only complaint about the A-bolt other than that it is the perfect rifle IMO. Ridiculously easy to remove the bolt and i love the detachable box magazine. the thing is a tack driver as well. Mine is a Stainless Stalker with B.O.S.S. chambered in .270

The difference is just what it says...The a bolt has three contacting surfaces on the bolt "action" and shaped like an "A"...The Xbolt has four and shaped like an "X"....I have "heard" that the X bolt is "inferior" to the abolt as well, but nothing substantiated as far as I am concerned...My abolt is a tack driver so there is really no need for me to look at other weapons anyways...People I spoke to do not point to the action as the inferior portion of the rifle, it was other things on the rifle that were changed in an attempt to make the weapon lighter or cheaper...one of the two, but most gunsmiths do not like the changes, I do know that much...

I would like to hear an explanation of why he thinks that is. I have shot both the x and a bolts side by side fairly extensively and I have no complaints about accuracy from either. My opinion of the two is.....
Positives of xbolt
I like the trigger a little better, but not as noticeable as some imply. Def not on par with shilen or jewel
More compact and sleek. Not real important to me, and I think it allows for the detachable mag, which I don't like.
Bolt opens while on safety. Nice upgrade.
LOVE the bolt throw. Love it.
Negatives
That mag almost fricked me. I like the trap door on the a bolt.

FTR, I know gunsmiths that say all things Remington suck and are junk. I know smiths that won't touch a browning. What I'm saying is if someone tells you it's inferior and doesn't have some good reasons, I would take it with a grain of salt. Not saying the x isn't inferior, just saying.

I killed a Doe 2 weeks ago with a .270 a-bolt and it hit dead on at 80yds. just bought but haven't shot a x-bolt 7mm-08. Both have Nikon scopes which are great. the all steel a bolt is heavier. I like the recoil pad on the x-bolt and that you can retract the bolt while the safety is on. I hear the x-bolt adjustable trigger is really nice. Both are great guns IMO. I would go with which gun feels better to you.

Pretty damn sure the a bolt is made in japan as well.

Just picked me up a Swarovoski 4x12-50 for a hair over $800. I will be picking up an x bolt this weekend. After hours and hours of reading reviews, I believe it'll do okay.

I have been very happy with mine except for the mag issue. Oh and I have a buddy that shattered the trigger guard on his when the recoil banged it on the 4whheler rack. Really not sure how I feel about that actually.

You'll like it. I have a .308 X-Bolt in synthetic and stainless, and a .308 Medallion. Neither one shoots better than the other on a bench. If ya want something to look at go A-bolt,if ya wanna put meat on the ground and not have to worry bout scratching anything grab the X-Bolt. Honestly the trigger is 3 times better and smoother on the X IMO

I have an a-bolt in 7wsm that I love. I was relaying what one smith's opinion was. I have not shot an x-bolt yet, but I have to sight in a friends 300wsm x-bolt. Soon and I am looking forward to shooting one.
