Busted I believe a Tom off the roost this morning. Heard him last weekend in roughly the same spot and moved in this morning, and kicked him off the roost about 15 minutes before shooting time. No gobbling at all before that and he was further off the creek then we expected.

There were A LOT of droppings under the tree, so it was clearly a regularly spot. It was amazing actually, younger pine then I'd think they'd like and all the droppings were in about a 2x2 ft spot so he must have sat in the exact same spot every night.

How soon should we try and return? I can't hunt tomorrow or Easter anyway. But you think he'll be back Monday? Or done?

He may be back or he may not.
Turkeys are weird and they sometimes just act like turkeys ,, heck if it was that early he may have thought you was a hog or something else. We are not the only thing in the woods. I wouldn’t hunt him till Monday but if I knew where a Turkey had been that’s where I would be.

Sometimes they return sometimes they don't. If he got separated from the hens when you busted that can be an easy kill. I normally sit tight and don't call until he gobbles. If he was alone or they didn't separate all you've accomplished is spooking him.

Yeah they weren’t gobbling at all.

I always ask myself that though, how do turkeys not spook all the time at night when deer or hogs go through? Or hell a raccoon or something? I know many times humans don’t sound like animals, but an armadillo going through a palmetto stand sounds is probably as loud as anything in the woods.

They do, hell deer do for sure. I’ve seen deer spook other deer I don’t know how many times. Saw an armadillo spook an old doe this past season, she jumped up and took off about 20 yards, stopped and barked. Finally realized what it was and eased back to her spot

Eta: You said at night, I guess they feel safe up in the trees?

I would check him again as soon as you can hunt, but don't get too close. See if you can get him to gobble with plenty of room between you and him.

Also, now that all the foliage is out, be careful. Turkeys are a lot closer than you may believe with leaves on the trees.

Wont be anymore lol.. he likely stays near your property. But wont be roosting there anytime soon. Turkey move around roosting anyway so not a huge deal. They dont want to stick to a routine and make easy prey. Once they feel threat in an area they are gone swap it up

It’s funny you say this because most of the country it’s true. But I’m hunting gulf coast pines for the most part and it really doesn’t get any thicker then it already is. Stays the same almost year round. Obviously some increase but by no means like further north.

He probably will, at least to that area. Hard to say for sure. You should be ok, especially if you didn’t try to call to him after.
