I have looked at old threads on this but still need some assistance if you'll indulge me.

Heading to Georgia to buy a used boat on Monday. Georgia does not title anything. Owner has registration for boat and trailer. Registration in Georgia is good for a while (more than a year).

1. Research says I need 3 notarized bills of sale for boat/motor and 3 seperate notarized bills of sale for trailer?

2. Trailer value should be agreed to as low because that is what I'll ultimately pay Louisiana tax on?

3. Copy of Georgia owner's Driver's Liscense?

4. Make sure owner signs the bills of sale exactly how it appears on registration?

Am I missing anything? Where do I find acceptable Bills of Sale templates?

Looks right to me, but I have never done multiples.

I would adapt this form to the location of the sale.

Sounds safe, but overkill. DMV wants a bill of sale for trailer only. W&F and Tax office want a bill of sale for boat motor and trailer. Tax office makes a copy. Original bill of sale for boat, motor and trailer goes to W&F.

Yes.

Make sure you get the previous registration to avoid taxes at the sales and use tax office where you fill out form 1331.

Form 1331 goes in packet with previous registration, bill of sale, and boat title/registration form that you send to W&F.

I just spent the last few days doing this with a guy out of Arkansas.

If you still need a bill of sale go-by, send email to my user name @gmail.com. I may still have the one I used.

When i did this, it seems like i had to get a form from the Parish tax collector too and show evidence that the previous owner paid sales tax when the boat was new… I then had to bring that form signed by the local idiots to W&F in Baton Rouge…

Thanks. Really enjoying it so far. Didn't have everything I wanted, but the price left plenty room for additions.

You will have to pay taxes on the entire setup as well. I had to pay taxes on the full amount when I purchased my used boat in Mississippi last year. Pay that tax to the LA Dept of Revenue before going to LDWF and your trailer tax to DMV.

Just went thru this process complete pain in the butt.

Get a itemized bill of sale for the trailer and boat separately. DMV only cares about the trailer purchase price.

Florida had an affidavit I had to get the dealership to send me, proving I paid taxes. However Fl tax is 7%. La tax is 10%. Took form 1331 to State dept of revenue first, and then the city. Had to pay the additional 3% tax which freaking sucks. Then you mail 1331 form, original MSO etc into WLF.

The whole process is a royal PITA.

I believe I would try to just keep it registered as a Georgia boat and trailer. I'd tell em that Georgia was the state of principal use. I did that with my boat here in Virginia. I fished mostly in Tennessee with it.

Im domiciled in LA. I don't think I'd be able to pull off maintaining registration in a state where I don't own any property. I would think insuring a boat that is registered in a different state might be an issue as well?

I got no idea as this is my first boat and first time dealing with registering, titling, etc....

When I did mine, I did a total of 9 notorized bills of sale. 3 for the boat, 3 for the trailer, and 3 for the engine (owner had a title for the engine so I figured why not). It is very important to treat the boat and trailer as separate transactions with separate bills of sale for each. DMV doesn't care that you bought a boat and LDWF doesn't care that you bought a trailer. Have multiple ORIGINAL notorized bills of sale for each.

It ended up being overkill but not by much. You have to go to your parish assessors office and have them bless that original buyer paid federal taxes on the sale. After that you go to the state assessors office and prove it to them. Then you go to a DMV to get the trailer signed over to your name and registered and you pay a tax on the purchase price of the trailer. Luckily for you the trailer is generally worthless so you should have paid almost nothing for the trailer. Luckily I paid almost nothing for the trailer. You only pay taxes for the trailer. Then you go to quail drive and get the boat registration done.

I dont remember how many original bill of sale I had to leave but I do remember that I started off with 9 and had I THINK 1 of each left when the process was done.
