Cajun RocketPot - My Experience

During our last discussion about pots and burners someone linked to the Cajun Rocket Pot. Well I decided to spend the extra money on a better grade pot than my Bayou Classic. I used it for the first time on 4/15, the drain valve leaked bad, it is not welded to the pot, it is a cheap valve that is held in place by a rear nut. I didn't think to much about it and figured I could add a high temp rubber washer and fix it. I went to use it again last night and noticed 2 of the dimples missing on the bottom, 1 of which fell off when I set it on the burner.
I use a high pressure valve and 40lb propane tanks both running Bayou Classic double jet burners, the rocketpot didn't boil any quicker than my standard Bayou Classic pot. Both pots had measured amounts of water, both propane tanks were full, and regulators set at the same point, I set this experiment up to see if their faster boil times were correct.
All in all I am not impressed, now I will see how their customer service is as I would like to return the pot for a refund, not because of their "boil in half the time" claim but due to the poor quality. I know some on here say Bayou Classic is cheap and won't hold up, well my BC pots have held up and at a fraction of the cost are in my opinion a better value for the people that boil 6-12 times per year.

When we boil and it is only a few times a year, we are never in any hurry at all. shite, half the fun is eating, but the other half is talking, drinking and having a kick arse time before, during, and after the boil. I would never need one,but not knocking anyone that wanted one. A friend has that 55 gallon looking thing cut on its side and it works good. I like the garden hose attachment for draining on it.

My buddy has one hooked up to NG, and we found that it takes 1/2-1/3 less time to boil water. He hasn't ever had a problem with his. Maybe you got a bad one

Agreed. You might have gotten a lemon or something. I've used them numerous times and always been impressed with them. If and when I ever buy another crawfish pot it will definitely be a rocketpot.

hate to hear this, as I was thinking about buying one of these myself over the next year or so....sounds like nothing that tightening up their quality control wouldn't straighten out, though...

My father had a similar experience with the Rocket Pot he bought. He was willing to try it out, but upon putting it to use, we actually melted 3 of short aluminum heating rods located on the bottom of the pot and 2 actually chipped off the bottom. We were not using some type of exotic burner. It was a standard burner. Not sure if he returned it, but he wants to.
It might work for some, but to me it gets a thumbs down.

I've never used one, but I'll bet you would get much better results on that type of pot with a banjo style burner (i.e., a lot more noticeable change in boiling time). Adding a lot of extra pressure to jet burners (and any burner really) is going to use more propane than will be justified by the extra heat you get.

You're trolling too hard. If you haven't used a ceramic cooker, then you're really missing out. And as far as YETI goes, you either have a use for it or you don't. They may not be practical for everyone, but they certainly have a place.

Nothing you said has anything to do with my point, but ok

Thanks for the feedback. Although I wasn't really considering buying one, it's good to know I'm not missing out on a better featured product

My old man just bought one of these (see below). It's well outside my price range, but damn can that thing boil some crawfish. First time we used it was the other weekend, and it was much much easier then the standard setup.

I'll take heavy gauge steel over ceramic any day. I had a kamado joe for all of a month or so before trading it. No stranger to cooking outside, but there is no advantage over heavy steel. For the amount I sold it for I got a larger segmented steel pit.
As for the yeti, no. Pelican bas better hinges and latches. But to be honest, Coleman will send you stainless hinges for one of their chests made in the US (and they used to do it for free). Pop the plastic off, install the stainless, you've got a damned good chest that holds ice for 4-7 days.

Cooked with one of those at a buddy's house saturday. Those are the shite

Venables qouted me 2600. Bought a Rocket Pot Pro instead. Have boiled 200lbs in it and noticed that it really didn't boil any quicker but felt like I used much less propane. My drain was welded on and was very useful. All in all its a good set up but is on the pricey side.
