So I have a cast iron sewer cleanout smack dab in the middle of my front lawn. Can I pour dirt over it and let my grass grow over it as long as I remember where it's burried? Or what can I do to hide it?

Won't you have a hump where you pile dirt up to bury it?

but sure, if you can remember or draw measurements and remember where you put them then go ahead.

Possibly plant a bush beside it?

or get a tire, paint it pink and plant flowers in it around the cleanout. thats a tight look for a front yard.

Well I just ripped up my front yard to widen my driveway so when I regrade it, I can incorporate hiding the sewer cleanout into the grading.

Well I don't see any issue with covering it up. Remembering where it is 5 years from now is the trick. I find it odd how some people will leave their pvc cleanouts around their new 350k house just sticking up out of the ground like a sore thumb. I have septic and my cleanouts are buried but I keep detailed measurements in the "manual" for my house. Also keep a copy taped to inside of electric panel door.

The guy I purchased my home from had buried it. Luckily, my neighbor remembered where it was.

Think that's what I'll do. Gotta regrade the yard this week anyway. (damn I wish we had the excavator a few more hours)

Mine was spray painted green by a previous owner. Trying to find that in a patch of ground cover in the shade of several trees can be hard.

Why not put one of those hatches they make for your water cut off or other irrigation over it? That way at least its in line with the grade of your yard and then once your grass grows around it, it will be essentially invisible especially from the street. But its still very easy to find and easy to use.

Yes, but that's tougher than it sounds. I would try to incorporate it into a larger flower bed or other lawn decoration, paint a PVC cap black (or other color to match what you've done) to cover it and conceal it like that.

You're asking for trouble IMHO if you bury it.

It's cast iron, find it with a metal detector if ever needed to.

That's not a bad idea if you own a metal detector. But for some of us, that would mean having to find the sewer cleanout AND having to find a metal detector.

Camouflaging it with some landscaping or installing a meter box customized for a larger diameter pipe are also good alternatives.

I would just landscape something around it, then hide it in my landscaping.

I'd do this.

If I had a big yard maybe...but this is New Orleans. It's in the section of grass to the right of my walkway to my stairs which is about 15 x 15. It sticks out like a sore thumb.

You can generally change the height of them FYI, I don't know about cast iron but I don't see why not. But pvc is very easy to change. That's what I was talking about, is lowering it to below ground level then installing a box with a hatch that's level with your yard. The same way your average water shut off valve is installed.

If I lived in !New Orleans, a sewer cleanout would be the least of my worries. Invest in bulletproof windows in your home.
