Chandeleur Island fishing trip info

My dad, some friends and I are planning a trip to the Chandeleur islands around May. Anyone on here have some helpful tips and fishing advise. My dad has two cabin boats that we are going on, and we will pull a skiff behind each for fishing the flats. Gonna spend two nights out there.

Don't be afraid to move. We've had trips where we were catching a ton of small ones, only to go around the point (we were wading so moving was tough) only to find dudes who had limited out on nice ones.
I think it's a good idea to have some wrecks or structures on the bill too, may be able to haul in some huge ones. Curlew is a fantastic spot if you're the first there. Don't hit it trying to find it, though y'alls boat might make a nice addition to the wreck site.

Do not put fish on a stringer tied to you.

I will concur. Not so much of the losing a life variety, as losing a limb.
I've had some experiences involving sharks and wade fishing at the Chandeleur Islands. Enough so, that we fished from the boat the remainder of that trip, and the following trip.

If possible bring some live croakers for the shallow well heads. This is where you will find the sow trout. Like others have said, Curlew and North Island will yield some good trout but watch for the sharks. Nothing like wading through the water and having a stringer full of trout start pulling you around

I would suggest a large floating net instead of a stringer out there if you have to wade.

Made a few summer trips out there in the late 90's and we used the floating net setup's for holding caught fish. Mine's got blue netting and a styrofoam ring around the top, the netting cinches closed on top, works well. Never had shark problems with it but saw plenty of folks that had "issues" with their regular stringers being tugged on. no thanks
Planning to head out there this year, first time in a while. Probably will make the run from end of MRGO rather than trailering all the way to Venice. Used to stay on the Chandeleur Islander barge/camp out there but it's no-more! The only oufits i've heard of still going are based out of Biloxi/Gulfport area. Great times in the past catching trout all night off the barge under lights

Pretty sure this is where we are heading out of. I like the floating basket idea. Matter of fact I think we already have some from when we would go crabing.

Floating basket is the only way to go.No headache getting them off the stringer either. Also when you get into a hot bite its quicker to throw them in the basket. Make sure you mount a small plano box on the ring to store extra baits, jig heads, pliers ect.. Also I like to set my catch net on top of the basket so it is easy to get to when landing the fish. I used to fish with a guy who used a minature Louisville slugger to hit the specks when landing them. He said that it stunned them so he could land them easier. All I ever saw him do was kill them or knock them off the hook.

Did this to mine, very good idea, handy to keep extra baits like plugs or plastics in diff colors. As for the bat, maybe good to have for keeping Jaws at bay but not sure on knocking out the trout. When surf fishing, no matter what, some get away when trying to unhook or get in the basket, just hope it's not the big one of the day.

Sharks are BAD out there fricking pesky arse bull sharks, hammerheads, scallopheads, black tips etc. They are every where. In 2005 I was fishing inside and chasing abig school of trout draging about 6 behind me on long break away stringer as I have been ripped before and look over an an adjaecent finger bar as the trout have gone to other side of cut again and there is a 8 foot bull shark starting to swim my way. That was last damn straw. Bought a sea kayak next year.
Also always wear shoes as the oyster shells can kill you too. Friend took 38 stitches years agao and we had to transfer to three boats to get him in. You are 31 miles from Mississippi at light house and the bullshite about helicopter rescue is bullshite. So be careful and dont get shite faced and stupid like everyone does, and then bitches about not catching fish.
I am not an expert as it has been years but my buddies used to live out there, and used to Talk to Mark and crew a good bit. Tips I can remember.
It will be hit and miss this time of year. Move until u find them.
Use Flouracarbon. Just because.
Live shrimp and croakers under weighted corks from drifting boats is what we aways did. Keep at least 4 lines baited at all times. 2 cork rigs, one bottom or more, one with spoon artificial.
Fish at night too. Reds, sharks, small cobia, etc.
