Zero experience in crabbing and the kids wanna go this weekend. Where can I find traps in the Lafayette area or do you recommend crabbing with a “string” and some chicken. I have no clue. Any advice is appreciated.
Will probably go to Rockafeller point or anywhere near Lafayette... all ideas welcome!

if you buy traps with floats you need trap tags that you have to pick up at LDWF. Strings and nets no such thing.

Your best bet to find what you need is Louisiana Net & Twine on Cameron. Call first to make sure they’re open before going. I went to Rockafeller last weekend but we went by boat and crabbed off a weir. Off a weir I’d use nets/drop pots along with stick and string lines, off the bank stick and string. A shrimp basket helps to cull out the small ones and females before putting them in the ice chest. La Net & Twine should have some grabbers too, get a set to help transfer them. For a family at least 3 dip nets. Chicken, melt or turkey necks for bait, take your pick. Make sure you keep count of the crabs and don’t go over the limit, there’s a size limit too I believe. We kept 130 last Saturday. Bring sun block and OFF encase the horse flies are bad. Good luck!

They close at noon today and I can’t get there in time. Can you explain how to use the string and chicken/bait method? Like you would explain to a kindergartner.... would appreciate!

tie string off to something on the bank or bring some tent stakes to tie off to. Tie bait very tightly to other end. Throw bait out, i usually have about 15-20' of string. When you see the string pull tight, lower net into water and slowly pull the crab over the net. Raise the net quickly capturing the crab. I like to use black string and a long net on a wood stick.

Black tar line string, tie 12’ give or take off to something say a weir if you’re on one. Tie the chicken to the end you’ll be throwing in the water (obviously lol). Buy two bags of leg quarters. I tie on a whole leg quarter per line. If a gator grabs the chicken, don’t wrap your hands around the line. They tend to frequent the areas people normally crab for the “free meal”. One thing you just have to deal with. Let the chicken sit in the water and you’ll normally see the line moving when they’re on it. Pull it in slow and when you see them, scoop them with the dip Net. You can probably find what you need at academy being La Net & Twine will he closed. I use this style grabbers for the crabs and they work great. Rinse everything off when you get home.

Turkey necks > Chicken necks
Try to find these, according to their site Academy on Louisiana Avenue has them in stock.
LINK
Make sure to tie/hook your bait to the center, crabs will run off with it if not.
We have about 8 of these we would use when crabbing at Rockefeller as well as about 6 just string lines.
We take a wooden stake, tie about 20' of twine to it(wrap excess around the stake), and tie a neck. throw it in the water, wait a bit, pull slowly and scoop any crabs that are hanging on. Stab the stake in the ground so you don't have to worry about tying off on something.
ETA: You going in a boat?

No boat. Thanks for all the help, ya'll. I'm hoping for a good first experience for the kids (and us). If we catch any, I'll post pics. Looks like I have some shopping to do ! Going to try for Sunday morning !

Looong time ago, my father would bring us down the road that leads up to Avery Island. They had these little levies we'd crab. I was about 8 or so. We had a ton of crab lines out so I'd walk up and down checking the strings one after another. One time I was shooting the shite with my brother behind me while pulling up a line. It was heavier than normal, but after pulling lines all morning it didn't register. As I turned around to lay the net, this big fricking GOLD EYED alligator was 4-5' from me on my line. It saw me as I saw it and he hissed and thrashed his tail and ran off to my right with my hand still on the string. Pulled me flat onto my face. My dad laughed so hard he spilled his Taaka and Kool-Aid.

Mais I’m gonna have the kids bring their BB guns and a bat- adding that to my packing list!
