Crappie, sac-a-lait, white perch....(bump for evening traffic)

I dont care what you call it, myself and some friends are hoping for a few tips... I follow this board regularly and have read some of the recent threads on this topic. We plan on fishing false river, henderson, and the channel under I10 in the basin. I am an experienced fisherman, but grew up cutting my teeth fishing trout, cats, and bass in WV. So it goes without saying i have the basics of fishing down, but am looking for local pointers and suggestions related to fishing these waters for the title fish.
Some background: We currently plan on using worms, shinners, jigs, and Berkeley crappie bait... We will be fishing out of a flatbottom jon-boat under man power and a trolling motor...
We recently went this past Sunday to false river and were skunked. We were fishing at multiple depths to try to locate fish, but were unsuccessful fishing the piers/docks and some bank structure. We did see tons of coot and mallards! Which is always nice. I think this Saturday we plan to go fish under I10 in the basin. We currently fish out of a flat bottom jon-boat powered by hand or trolling, so that does limit us some.
The OD board helped us greatly in preparing for duck hunting, everyone had great suggestions and really help make this a memorable year for a guy from WV and one from TX. Along the way we introduced a friend to hunting and he may now have the "bug". We hope to shoot the moon and get him hooked on fishing.
I am hoping someone from this board can give us pointers on false river, the basin under I10 and henderson. I.e. depth to fish this time of year, bait, jig color, specific locations on these lakes... I know some are secretive about their "honey holes" but if you could spare some information we will forever be in dept to you. If you have other suggestions, bring them on, and if you could maybe include a map showing boat launches at these new suggestions (remember I am not from LA), ect...
BONUS QUESTION: On a side note, it is my understanding there is no limit on frog other than size on public land. I remember gigging as a kid and would love to do it again, how is henderson or the basin around I10 for gigging/catching frogs?
The notes of cliff: I am not native to LA and am asking for pointers on fishing false river, the basin under I10, and maybe henderson swamp for crappie.... Everyone here was very helpful to us duck hunting and we were hoping to tap some of the enormous knowledge on this board related to fishing.
A little something for reading and your help!
Thanks for the advice so far, keep it coming!!

Throw false river out of your arsenal, go to old river when the water gets right. I suck at catching white perch but I do know those two rules. If you want real advice, go to erwinville (on your way to false river) and stop by to chat with JD Salter. He has a shop on the right side of 190 and will tell you what you need to know.

1)where are you located?
2)how far are you willing to travel?
also, check out crappie.com and go to the LA message board. a great website for "crappie" info

When i've looked around for the best areas to fish i've run across Henderson area part of the basin. Anyone know if that really is a great spot? Guess you'd have to launch at I10 and boat down there?

Damn, there is a lot of activity on crappie.com, thanks for the website.

I don't fish any of those areas for Sac-a-lait. I've fished False River for Bass, and haven't fished the others at all.
I'd suggest considering Old River in Morganza, Lake Verrett, and the Spillway.
If you hit Old River, use shiners or a jig under a cork. Fish the buttonwood trees and cypress flats. The best time is after the Spring. Follow the MS River stage in BR. When it hits 21ft and falling its on.
Lake Verrett and the Spillway fish the same. They heat up in the spring too. Some days there will be 2 or 3 sac-a-lait on every cypress tree and somedays nothing. I use a cork with about 16 inches of line below it. Jig or shiners. Flip it to the base of the tree, let it sit a few seconds, pop it, let it sit a few more seconds, and then re-cast.
Sac-a-lait love structure. Fish the denses cover you can. If you aren't getting caught up a lot and re-tying often, then you aren't fishing heavy enough cover.

when searching for Old river, i find its closer to Batchelor LA, I am assuming this is the river you are talking about as it is a bit north of Morganza. Can you explain or show me where the public launch is? I am having difficulty finding it. Additionally, the "spillway" are you referring to the one in Morganza? Thanks for the info!

Yes it is in Batchelor. LINK Here's a link to the landing.
The spillway I'm referring to is the lower portion of the Atchafalaya Spillway near Pierre Part. Unless you're going with someone who knows the area or have a good GPS, I'd be very cautious here. Very vast and its a labyrinth of canals and bayous. If you want to try it, get a good map or GPS and start working it in sections. Learn a little at a time.

Thank you very much, i have pinned it down or Google Earth. Thanks for the warning on the spillway, we have been cautious as we are definitely unfamiliar with the bayou's and swamps.

I can think of several places off the top of my head that has some good white perch fishing.
1. Larto Lake in Catahoula Parish
2. Lake Louie/Bayou Louie in Catahoula Parish
3. Lake Bruin in Tensas Parish
4. Lake St. John in Concordia/Tensas Parish.
5. Lake Concordia in Concordia parish
6. Old River in Concordia Parish
All of these place are about 1 1/2 to 2 hours from the Baton Rouge area. Depends on how fast you drive and traffic at the time.
