I’ve lived in Alaska for the last 6 years with limited areas to shoot. One of the things I most looked forward to when moving back to the southeast is getting a new bow (mine disappeared on my move to AK). I’ve browsed around the last couple months but it seems there are a lot more crossbows for sale. I’m leaning towards getting a crossbow for hunting and a recurve for everyday target shooting. I think I’ve settled in on Excalibur for the crossbow and still researching bolts. Any recommendations on recurve bows and arrows? Anyone know of specials on crossbows? I live in LA now. I’m going to browse prime deals the next couple days but don’t expect to find anything.

My hate of them is on record, but my left shoulder is pushing me that direction.

Cant help you in the crossbow area, but, I own quite a few recurves. Custom bows, Bows from Bear and Martin etc. if you just want bow to start target shooting get a Black Hunter off amazon. I have 2 of them and they shoot as good as my expensive bows and only cost around $100.00 . For a little more you can go to "Twig Archery" and get a "Black Spitfire" recurve for a little over 200. Its a great shooter and my favorite bow to take 3D shooting. John and Gayle are great folks and he will make sure you get it set up right and help with the right spined arrows for it.,

I have to disagree with this, also. I have partial tears in each of my shoulders so I'll probably have to go this route eventually. I'm not there yet since I'm using a 60lb draw weight on my Mathews. I can pull it back with no pain so that's a good thing. But when the time eventually comes, I'll ask for advice on this site.

Thank you. This is the information I’m looking for. Arrow recommendations for it?

I am starting to think that my last hunt got me here. I had to draw very quickly in an awkward sitting position and the paid that led to my recent surgery started not that long after.

Can’t help you with crossbow…..
Go to 3Rivers.com. They are a traditional archery store. They also have spine calculators and an arrow builder on their website. Good people to talk too. Steer you in the right direction.

I second the Black Hunter recommendation and that Twig Archery is a good place to deal with. As to arrows, that depends on your draw length and the bow's poundage. My advice is to get an an arrow test kit from 3Rivers Archery. They will sell you a few arrows of differing stiffness. Don't have them cut -- order full lenghth arrows -- and don't have them fletched. Order a common arrow type to test, like Easton carbon arrows. See which of the different unfletched arrows shoots straight for you. Then order six of that stiffness of arrow for your first arrows. As you learn more, you may consider cutting the arrows or changing the tip weight to achieve differing results. But that isn't necessary at first (or perhaps ever).

This is on sale for $75. I have some rehab to do on my shoulder so I just ordered one. I am going to see how it goes and then either upgrade to a better one or try lefthanded. Thanks again for your help.

Depends on what the weight now is and your draw length. I shoot Gold Tip Traditional carbon arrows with 125 grains up front . This is for a 42 pound draw weight and a 28.5 draw length. I also shoot aluminum which is a lot cheaper and honestly just as good. I just like the way the carbons look. Have fun. Oh yea, first thing you need to do is order a good string to replace the one that comes with that bow. The one they give you is garbage.

I bought my son a Barnett crossbow last year. Killed his first deer with it. I was a crossbow hater. Been trying to sell my compound ever since.

Yes. 3 Rivers is a great source for trad archers. They have a dynamic spine calculator on the site that will really help you choose the correct shaft

Honestly I'm a huge proponent of crossbows for most hunters. Don't get me wrong, I use a compound and I'm even a high school archery coach so I spend a ton of time shooing with with traditionalish bows. That said your average archer who barely spends time practicing would be way better off with a crossbow. Both for success and lack of wounded animals.

I just moved over to the dark side today, and bought the new Venom X from Ten Point. They had just set it up and I was the first to shoot it. Had it sighted in with only 3 shots. Never shot a crossbow in my life, but was super impressed with the speed and accuracy. I just wasn’t disciplined enough to spend hours shooting my compound to feel confident at longer distances.

I do suggest trying em out before you buy. I went in with full intentions of buying a Ravin. The Ten Point just felt better to me.

Like others have said as far as recurves you can’t go wrong with any bow made by bear. Only suggestion I could give is to keep your draw weight low and focus on form. From experience I can tell you the worst thing to do is let your pride get the best of you and try to draw too much weight. It’s better to be accurate from 10 yards than un accurate at 40 yards
