CVA Scout- 35 Whelen or 350 Legend

I’m looking at purchasing a single shot CVA scout this year for primitive season. I’m torn between buying a 35 Whelen and a 350 Legend.
I like that the 35 Whelen has more thump, and with a muzzle brake shouldn’t have that bad of recoil. It’s probably overkill for where I’m hunting (bottomland woods with a shot no further than 120 yards).
The main negative for me is the price of ammo. The 350 Legend ammo is cheaper and has more options.
Anybody have experience with both cartridges and prefer one over the other? What scope and rings do you have on your setup?

I have one in 35 Whelen and the thing just flat eats 225gr accubonds….. I love it

I would just get the Whelen. With 180 grain Barnes ammo it doesn't kick bad at all out of that rifle.

I freakin love my 35. I shoot 200gr Horandy rounds. Mount a nice Leupold on it and call it a day. FWIW… both my sons (8 & 9) shoot 350’s. Low recoil and still plenty of power.

I have a scout in 35 whelen and shoot the 200gr Hornady’s. Bought 4 boxes of Ammo a few years ago when I found them on sale for around $30a box. Have killed deer, pigs, and an elk with it. I mainly bow hunt now but when I do rifle hunt, it has become my weapon of choice.

Another vote for the Whelen with 200 grain Hornady's. I haven't killed a bunch of deer with it. (Maybe 6 or 7) But have never had one take another step.

I have the 35 CVA scout, it doesn't kick too bad but wish I would have gotten it with the muzzle brake. I love it and it's the only gun I use during deer season since my shooting lane is less that 150 yards.

Get the 35 with a brake. It's a solid DRT rifle. I shoot 180 gr accubonds and my scope is sighted 1" high @ 100 and it hits about 2" low at 200. There's ammo options out there but don't wait till October to start shopping for it!

My wife shoots the 35 Whelen in a Thompson Center Encore without any problems. I have a CVA somewhere around here that will be going on the market soon.

Out to 200 yards the 350 legend is legit.
Pleasure to shoot and does plenty of damage.
I bought a 20 ga slug rifle and that thing is a beast. Man it drops the hammer on em

35 Whelen is a 35-06. A lot to like with that round.

I am interested in speaking with you about the CVA

The 350 legend was made for midwestern states that limit primitive to straight walled cartridges. If you don’t hunt in those states there is zero reason to get it over the 35 whelen.

So the cartridge is designed to work in the states with the largest deer. The cartridge kicks less that a Whelen and damages less meat. But no reason to use it in places with smaller deer?

Nothing against the 350 Legend, I own one. Although, choice between the two for hunting is the 35 Whelen. I do not recommend using the brake unless you’re wearing ear protection. I don’t find they kick that bad, imo.
Told a hunting bud to take his brake off his Whelen at the camp. That evening, heard him shoot. Said yep that’s that loud Whelen. Shortly after a follow up shot didn’t seem as loud. He shot a hog, took the brake off and shot another.

Same here, a super accurate gun for the large bore....up to 225yds, kills every time.

It’s not a question of whether or not one will kill a deer. The ballistics of the whelen are all around better. It’s a matter of self imposing a restriction when it only applies to certain areas. If you just want the 350, it’s a free country.

Sounds like the consensus is 35 Whelen.
Damn the ammo is expensive. What two or three rounds should I start off with to see what groups best in the rifle?

It doesn't matter. Whatever is cheapest and available. Performance is irrelevant, it's a very dramatic amount of excess horsepower for deer. I've shot a few of the CVA scouts in various calibers and they all seem to shoot well regardless of what you feed them. In 35 whelen I've shot core locks, nosler accubonds, hornady 185gr, and barnes reloads. They all did fine on paper. On deer, it seems like the hornady and accubonds really smash the deer up. The 250gr core locks were the least destructive.
Few people realize that .35 whelen and .338 win mag are right next to each other on the horsepower scale, just a tick below .375 h&h. It was designed to be a poor man's 375. Basically anything is going to flatten any deer as far as you can hit them with decent shooting.
The CVA scouts are excellent rifles. I wish I had a count of how many I've shot for various people. They were all great shooters.

If you're hunting in Mississippi buy the Whelen. I shot Remingtons the first few years then an uncle bought me a box of 200g Hornadys for Xmas and that's all I put through the barrel now. There isn't a better gun to hunt with from November to February in MS and nothing 'primitive' about it.
