I find it hilarious that you can't use a winchester lever action .30-30 with iron sights in primitive season
Can’t even use a 410 pump with buckshot or a 45colt revolver with open sites.

but you can use a crack barrel .35 whelen with a scope.
Heck yeah! And for deer still hunting you shouldn’t need more than one shot anyway.

The 30-30 is about the oldest smokeless powder rifle design you could use and a legitimate handicap vs your average dudes deer rifle
Yes, and if I’m not mistake it is the oldest, not just about the oldest.

It's laughable.

I have the CVA Scout. Love it. If ammo price is your only concern, spend a FEW bucks and get over it. I mean, even 1 box over a season, ...enjoy the best gun for yourself and buy 1 less 6 pack of beer.

I wouldn't mind either, where are you located?
Claiborne Parish. Best way to reach you? Wish TD had DM’s.

The 35 Whelen is way more versatile. It will kill anything in North America. I have a CVA Scout topped with a Trijicon credo and warne rings. I also cut the barrel to 19 inches and run it suppressed. I love it! It's a very handy rifle and even with the 19 inch barrel it shoots 200 grain Hornady Superformance 2830 fps under 1 moa.

I'm in WM, not far at all. I'll be going through Claiborne on Tuesday heading to Magnolia.

Most likely a problem w/ the scope not being able to handle the recoil. I hunt exclusively w/ handguns, some of which can generate pretty hefty recoil, e.g. the 375 JDJ shoots a 225 gr bullet at 2500 fps in a very light 5# package. A few things you can try to solve your problem:
1. A scope more suited for heavy recoil.
2. Different mount/rings. I use only Weaver one piece base and Burris Signature Z-Rings (the ones w/ the plastic inserts). I have that on a 284 Win handgun w/ only 2 rings and it's holding up so far.
3. If there's room on your scope, you can use 3 rings instead of the usual 3. On my handguns chambered in 30 caliber and larger, I use 3 rings.
4. If the scope does move, you can minimize movement by mounting it so the scope's front turret surface butts against the rear surface of a ring.

bought a 35 Whelen with muzzle brake and topped it with a Leupold Freedom 4-12x40
Great choice. If you hit it you'll kill it.
