This will be my first year putting out a feeder. So pardon any ignorance in these questions.

I'll be welding the cradle for the barrel and feeder. It will be a suspended 55 gallon barrel with a timed feeder from a tree. It'll have a boat strap ratchet with cable on it to raise and lower it. Anything I should consider before building the feeder? It'll have legs on it long enough to sit on the ground without sitting on the feeder. Should I do anything to keep squirrels and coons out of the mechanism?

Does protein attract deer that much more efficiently than corn? And if so, can I put protein the the feeder maybe cut 50/50 with corn. I know protein is more expensive, but not necessarily cost prohibitive for me if it's worth it.

ETA: What recommendations do you guys have for a game camera that isn't completely junk. There is hardly any cell reception where we hunt, so I'm not sure a cellular camera is in the cards, but I don't mind paying for a decent model camera.

Protein generally swells up with humidity and can clog feeders.

Most protein feeders I have seen are gravity fed.

You don’t want to spin protein pellets it will get soft from just heavy dew. Feeding protein is a commitment and putting out enough to have an impact on your herd requires them to be able to eat at will and if you have several deer hitting a gravity feeder it’s not uncommon to go through a couple hundred pounds every couple of weeks during high usage times such as pre green up or pre acorn drops.

Alright. I'll stick with corn then. We can only make it out there every other weekend and it's not worth risking it clogging up and stop feeding.

Corn it is.

Anything else to be concerned about with the feeder itself.

I'll post pics when I get it built. Hoping to start on it today.

Put a coon guard around the spinner if not they will break it or at the least sit and spin it all out. If you have hogs they will camp out on it unless you put a exclusion fence around it. You may want to use a barrel cone for the bottom it helps to keep the corn moving evenly and not having corn sit on the edges and end up spoiling and clumping up.

Put a varmint cage over your timer, or raccoons will wreck it, and spin it til whole drum is empty.

Buy a 50/50 mix of corn and protein pellets or a mix of corn and roasted soybeans.

I've used grape koolaid powder mixed in. They like that.

They also like root beer soda mixed in. The vanilla is pungent.
