I think my 10 yr old Stihl has seen better days. Has electric finally caught up to gas in the power department or should I just get another two stroke Stihl?

Had an Echo gas trimmer for about the last ten years.
Finally wore out.
Made the move to battery powered. Dewalt 20V, beings I already have a few batteries.
Worked fine, enough power for yard work.
Ran a total of about three hours and stopped working.
Tried different fully charged batteries. Would not work.
Returned it for full refund and bought another Echo.
That my experience with battery weed trimmers.
I know others love them.
YMMV

There’s a huge range of “power” in weed eaters, particularly with Stihl.

Battery powered are going to be in the range of your typical high end “residential” weed eaters. This is plenty of power for the typical homeowner and makes the task much easier.

However, if your Stihl is a high end pro/commercial model then the battery powered is no comparison. If you’re having to cut thick brush/heavy weeds like around a pond or other extensive growth, the Stihl models are going to be your better bet.

Battery power has huge advantages in handling, weight, storage, usability, etc. Power is certainly not an advantage to them, but they have enough power to easily accomplish most tasks.

My Husky finally bit the dust. Bought a EGO 56 V a couple weeks ago. This thing is a beast. When my Stihl blower dies I will get the Ego blower.

And use the premix safe gas too!
Well worth the money.

So much this. These threads pop up every week. The new electric stuff is great, particularly if you have been using a shitty gas trimmer. But anyone who is used to a mid-line or commercial stihl/echo/shindaiwa will not be happy.

EGO 56 V, It is a beast

Bought this 3 years ago. More powerful than any gas one I have used. Has automatic string reload and haven't had any problems with it.

When battery powered trimmers run out of juice they just suddenly stop dead. You could be clipping away and just like a switch was turned off, they die.

I'll stick with my ECHO gas trimmer. Plenty of power, easy to load line and is a beast for all my trimming needs.

I have a Stihl electric and love it. The hell with keeping those 2 cycle motors running when I only need to use the trimer for 15 minutes every couple of weeks.

It you use a trimmer a lot and for long periods of time get gas. My battery last about 20 minutes and I can generally get every thing done in that time period.

Even better is the Stihl blower. Quiet and the battery that comes with it will run the trimmer two.

I'd say gas because I love the way it smells and the sound of my ECHO blowing everything in it's path down, I have one of the big bad MF'ers.

My neighbors would say electric because I spend as much time screaming and cussing as I do weed eating when it won't start.

Electric might be good for some. It takes me 45 minutes to trim. I'm gas only and have changed one carb in probably 10 years. Real gas only.

How much are you going to be trimming? I would need 3 extension cords to reach all of my property. No way in hell I could do an electric.

Not sure if you’re aware of it or not but they make these things nowadays called batteries. Batteries allow electric motors to run without extension cords.

Incredible, I know but they even have electric cars now and they run off batteries as well.

I have a 56v EGO and I would think there are very few people that would need more power than what it provides. It is a beast.

I bought the Dewalt 60V weed eater today. I was very impressed. I cut for over an hour, on high and still had over half battery. If it holds up, I’ll never buy a gas powered again.

I have both and gas is the way to go if you have any acres. City living small lots you can get it done with battery powered.
