Feeding whole cottonseed for deer

Anybody feed whole cottonseed for deer? I'm intrigued by it in several ways. 22.5% protein, rain doesn't bother it, coons and hogs dont eat it, etc. I put out a bag yesterday but they haven't touched it yet. Not sure how to get them to eat it yet. Put some corn out with it but seems like the resident coons did a number on that. Looking to see any good/bad about feeding it and what if anything you had to do to get the deer to take to it.

My only input is that I've yet to see anything a deer will eat that a hog won't.

Put a few bags in a cotton seed feeder, rolled mesh with a t post driven in the center. They’re going to look at it for awhile before they eat it the first time but they’ll soon be hooked! High in protein and some say better then feeding protein pellets.

Where are you finding sacks of cotton seed? You farm?

Just remember to stop feeding before the deer shed their velvet if not it will make them sterile.

Used it in South Texas for many years....great stuff and the set-up to feed it is inexpensive.

Believe it or not, I found it at Academy. I had read up on it for a while but never seen it anywhere locally. I saw it at Academy this weekend so picked up a bag to try it.

Everything I've read said that this was a myth unless you were in a pen where it was the vast majority of their diet. As long as its put out to supplement normal forage and feed, no problems with it. With that said, I would still stop feeding it around the season when we switch to rice bran anyway just in case those studies are wrong.

Gossypol toxicity. It can happen in overfeeding whole cotton seed.
It’s been seen in bulls feed too much cotton seed, but in a supplemental style feeding for deer highly doubtful it could get high enough to cause toxicity.
Rice bran can also cause bran disease and make the calcium resorb but again it has to be fed and consumed almost exclusively

They use it at our company lease in south Texas and the set up looks like this.
I wanted to try it at our place in North La but never could find the cottonseed.

Aren't you in NWLA? There's a gin at Belcher and Gilliam and one near the Port south of Shreveport. I think one in Armistead, too.

I know the gin in Fort Necessity used to sale it. We would buy it by the cotton trailer load to feed cows. Not sure if that gin is even still running

I am a dummy, the farmer next to me grows cotton. I am assuming the cotton seed he is using is the same that you feed?

I thought that proved the infertility thing as false?
Also how does feeding it out of troughs work?

The seed he is planting is not the same as what you would feed. Now days planting seeds have been delinted to get the fuzzy stuff off of the seed. It has also been treated with a whole host of different fungicides and insecticides. Will also cost you about $500 for a 50lb bag. The seed you get at your local cotton gin will cost about $200 per ton.

When you say bag do you mean a bulk tote or what would be like a 50lb bag of corn? Just trying to get my mind around how much fuzzy seed they could put in a bag.
