Fishing the beach in perdido key ***updated***

Here is where I’m staying
Never tried surf fishing. But the kids are addicted to fishing (8 & 12). What can I expect to catch? Do I need bait like sand fleas? Or I can use spoons and soft plastics?
Stayed all week in orange beach bc we couldn’t rent the condo in Florida. Had a great time. The kids fished every day and evening. Caught huge rays, cats, whiting, a shark, and pompano. First time I’ve ever fished the surf. Kinda addicted now.

Get a big spinning rig, loaded with braid. Use a 3oz weight, heavy leader with circle hook. Cut bait on bottom as far as u can throw it. Should be good for some sharks. Kids will love it.

If you can catch sand fleas on the beach put em on a Carolina type rig and cast in the surf, the pompano love them.
Early (break of day) topwater in the surf will get a lot of blowups.
Gold spoon after the sun comes up

Enjoy the beach and nice water. Don’t worry about fishing until you head back west

That’s what I’ve always done. Never tried to fish the surf but the kids are already packing their gear.

You need to make sure that their gear is rated for saltwater. Surf fishing will destroy your gear if your reels aren’t sealed and you don’t take care of them after fishing (thorough cleaning). I’m assuming you are wading into the surf. If fishing from the beach the maintenance will still be needed but less extreme.
I’ve always fished with spoons or basic swim baits in the surf (often a double rig). Most often caught Hardtails and Lady Fish. The lady fish are fun because they jump a ton and they school. Two of them on at the same time feels like a monster
but tough to land because they both jump constantly.

YouTube is your best friend for info on surf fishing, location is everything unless you want to unhook nasty baitstealing catfish, look for cuts, troughs and “deep” pools and troughs between sand bars, find that and its money in rising and especially falling tides, good luck...

You're right next to gulf national seashore... it's just to the right of your pin... I would try fishing the bay behind the island... lots of grass flats

Get a sand flea rake, use small hooks and pyramid weights. You’re also really close to the National Seashore Park and Little Lagoon, wade the grass flats dawn and dusk with a white body/red headed Top Dog or She Dog. May get trout or red to blowup...

please make sure and wear a mask while fishing on the beach.
My family will be there at the same time.
No reason to be a problem and spread this virus.

We always fish the surf in Gulf Shores! We catch Spanish and specks on live shrimp. Get the shrimp at the tackle store at the base of the bridge coming into Gulf Shores on 59. There’s also a really dumbass looking topwater lure my kid fishes with called a “bubble-lure”, damn Spanish and lady fish love it!! You can buy em anywhere around there.

If you don't have success in the surf (which I usually don't). Make sure to take one trip to Alabama/Florida Point East / Perdido Pass on east side of the big bridge. Its a good location for family to do beach things, and fisherman to do fisherman things. Just be ready for a mile walk on a board walk (cart preferred). It's also a public beach, so you have to deal with that aspect too but at least there's bathrooms and such.
The jetty holds fish and bait fish, with larger fish always patrolling. I've caught every species imaginable including some reef species there and I've helped another guy land an 8ft bull shark. Some of the locals I've met there say that certain times, pelagic can be caught there too. During low tide, you can get pretty far out on the jetty as it's exposed. Fish both sides of the rock jetty but be prepared to lose some leaders/gear.
The pass side is ever changing sand and most times creates a place you can wade out and be able to cast a drop off from say 2' feet deep to 20' deep. There's always something that will take live/fresh/frozen bait.
PARK HERE

Be careful wading- the current can really rip through there. There seems to be a handful of drownings in that area every year.

Saw this guy last year catch this off the beach around 6:30am in Perdido Key. Pretty crazy to see. Almost seemed they were fishing for it with their set up.
Wait, nevermind, this was Fort Walton, I'm an idiot. Still crazy though.

If you can wade throw a silver rattle trap. Always catch lady fish or blue fish or something.

Catch bait with little bream hooks with a shrimp segment in the knee deep foamy wash.
Put that little fish on your big hook and sling that out past the breakers.
Set drag light and use circle or kahle hook. When the fish starts running, simply tighten up the drag and the hook sets itself.
If you can catch a blue or ghost crab, those are good baits too.
The birds stalk fishermen there and steal bait, keep it put away. They'll take your hook too and then you've got a reel shitshow on your hands.
My favorite thing to do is just catch whiting after whiting in the shallows with shrimp pieces on small hook with my freshwater ultralight rig. Whiting have gill plates that will slice you wide open, use gloves. With this style of fishing you are usually in a rip current parallel to the beach, so I will cast it and walk with it, bait in my pocket. Can't really do this when/where it's crowded.
Another thing about surf fishing is 50% of people have no respect for your space. Totally oblivious. When people start to move in, just get up and go.

Kast master spoons will catch just about anything in the surf and you can chunk em a mile. If there ain't no Spanish about the lady fish will be a blast....poor man's tarpon. Gold is usually best. Cut bait and squid, shrimp on bottom will produce loads of catfish if you want to just catch fish and a big old gafftop will put a bend in a pole. I think its a little early for Pompano but I may be wrong...look up a sand flea rake and rig 'em on a fish finder / Carolina rig....Pompano are FUN to catch and good eating. If I going though I'd throw a gold kast master on a spinning reel with about a foot of wire....Spanish will cut you off and lady fish don't care if you have a 1/4 inch nylon rope....and lady fish are FUN to catch on light tackle...

No shite... a McDonalds straw lure (google it) behind a bubble is a BLAST!!!! Ladyfish will eat it on every cast....and again, for pure fishing fun on light tackle, lady fish are hard to beat.
