For those with box stands. What kind of roof do you have?

I am in the process of designing a box stand and can't decide on roof type. I was thinking tin on a couple of inch pitch but plywood would be easier and not require all the spray foam to seal; just don't know how long it would resist rotting. For those hunting in home made box stands how is your roof made?

Tin on an angle for run off. We've never had any problems with rotting.

Did you seal off the gaps made by the tin with spray foam or just leave them?

we seal them so we have less birds/mice/bugs/critters getting in.

Nothing like opening up the door to a box stand to be greeted by angry wasps
I am just trying to make this thing as comfortable as possible so I can introduce my 3yr old to hunting. I have a rickety old tripod back there now. It is going to be a 4'x4' box only about 5-6' off the ground. Fixing to put my ideas into auto-cad so I can get a good MTO before I go down to Lowe's.

We do the same thing. We also put spray foam in the cracks...
Once this is done, you are done.

Probably the most common thing to do. This is what we do on our property. Have very few vistors in my stand since I close my windows after every hunt.

I have had many box stand wasp battles
A couple years ago we built some stands out of scaffolding and left them with open windows.....big mistake. They became home to owls. They would fly out when you were climbing up but once you were sitting in the stand they would constantly "buzz the tower" and would occasionally try to get in the stand. It was always good to have a side arm or stick when hunting these stands.

On our old property we had the same issue, but with flying squirels. They would usually bail when climbing, but not always. I would throw their nest out every weekend.

Owl shite is nasty stuff.

Im a fan of a plywood roof with roll asphalt roofing. minimum 2/12 pitch. There is no need for sray foam filling (which squirrels quicky discover is removable) and it is MUCH quiter when it is raining. It cost a littel bit more than tin though but if you subtract the spray foam it is about even.

Do you put a peak or just a slant roof with tar paper and shingles? I have some left over architectural shingles and tar paper from my house.

I like a gable roof with the rolled roofing but you could do a single plane roof with your left over shingles. I would use 1/2" plywood and 5/8" stapels and tar to apply the shingles instead of nails though as the nails will stick through otherwise and you will hit your head on them.
The gable allows for even wall height on both sides and for more headspace in the center of the box stand.
make sure to seal the ends of the plywood though (paint with oil based paint or smear silicone on the ends) or use treated plywood.

We use tin. There is no sleep on earth like sleeping in a deer stand with a tin roof during a rain. Makes me sleepy just thinking about it.
We don't put windows in our box stands, just curtains. If you will nuke your stands around the first of August, you don't have to worry about wasps. It's always fun to climb into a stand with a can of wasp spray and a stick.
Nothing is worse than having a bunch of vultures nest in your stand. We have a stand that we just gave up on after being overcome with the fumes even walking by it.

tin. paint the inside part of the tin. helps a little with the noise when its rains.

Tin on top of plywood. It will never rot. Also if you plan on having this box for a while, you may want to go a little bigger. We recently upgraded our stands to 6x6. Especially with a little one, you are going to want a little more room for them to get situated to shoot. They won't be cramped up and bumping their stock on the stand.

This.
We have build all our stand larger the past few years. If your by yourself you have PLENTY of room. Last year I put My girlfriend, my buddy, and myself in one stand together and we fit just find. We don't normally hunt like this but neither of them had been hunting before and they had a good time.
with youth weekend coming up, these larger box stands will be coming in handy with one adult and a couple kids in each shooting house. Last year my two younger cousins(12 and 13) were able to pull off the " 1, 2 ,3 SHOOT!" and dropped two does simultaneously.

single piece of plywood and got to lowes and buy a roll of roofing. Don't make it aire tight either. you will have to fight wasps every year. if the wind blows through, they will not nest.
