My buddy and his wife don't have kids, they're in their late 50's or early 60's so their pets are their kids. He and "Tucker" took out the trash the other night before going to bed. Tucker went over to a location in their yard and started barking then yelped. My buddy went over to see what the fuss was about and saw the dog limping then went over and saw the rattler. They ran the dog to the vet but he died. He went back home loaded his shotgun went back to the same spot and the snake was still there and blasted it. It was 10pm at night in Leeds AL and nobody called the law which kinda surprised me. Tucker was a good boy. My friend is pretty tore up about it.

Upvoted for the pics and the short, concise narrative. Hate it for your friends.

A dog that little didn't stand a chance. That rattler looked to be around 4 ft. long lying next to that tire on the ground. That's a lot of venom dispensed by a snake that size.

I lost a house cat to a copperhead in the yard a few months ago. I feel for them.

Lost my Yorkie to a cottonmouth a few months ago, got 2 of my dogs and the Yorkie didn't make it. Fearless little SOB but it was too much for him.

You scared me though, my father in law has a yorkie named Tucker

prayers sent for your friends as Tucker pretty much was their child. That Timber rattle snake deserved to die as I would have done the same thing. I'm cool with snakes; however poisonous ones get the shovel

Yep. A friend of mine was hunting in the swamp for rabbits and came upon a 6 ft. rattlesnake that he shot and killed by shooting off the head. He knew I ate fried rattlesnake and brought it to me and when I skinned and cleaned it there was a good size rabbit in its gut.

The Outdoor board likes evil snek.

You'll find no sympathy here.

My lab almost got bit by one Saturday while we were checking feeders. Thankfully the snake was slithering away when she sniffed it.

I killed the snake!

Small dogs haven't got a chance if they get hit by a rattler. That sucks for your friends.

Can’t really blame the snake. It was just protecting itself. But blasting it away with a shotgun was letting it off easy imo. I would’ve gotten medieval on the bastard if it killed my dog

We have a place south of Abeline. Occasional rattler. We give all our dogs the rattlesnake vaccine annually. Bout $85 each year.
It doesn’t “cure” the dog if it gets bitten but makes the bite less severe and extra time to get to the vet.
Copperheads and moccasins aren’t as bad on dogs. But if you are in an area w rattlers, prob well worth the cost.
All that being said, big snake and little dog like that isn’t going to end well. Sorry for the loss

Canebrake (Timber) rattler. Nasty venom for man or beast.

On the other hand, all dogs go to Heaven.

I've had 3 dogs bit by snakes, 1 rattler, 2 cottonmouth. 3 different vets have told me differently as far as which is worse for dogs.

My personal assumption is they are all pit vipers, all suck for dogs equally.

Rattler bite survived
1/2 survived the cottonmouth

I would have stayed home and killed the snake while wife or kids took the dog to the vet. Then go meet them.

I wouldn't risk that serpent getting away before I got home.
