Wanting to take my daughter to New Mexico or Colorado for a Elk hunt for her HS graduation present. Would be in the fall of 2021. Any recommendations would be appreciated.....Go!

All depends on your budget. Honestly it’s cheaper going to Africa on a plains game hunt than a quality fair chase elk hunt with zero points (assuming she doesn’t have any built up).

Do you need the points on the injun reservation?

Colorado has more units and tags that non-residents can buy over the counter(OTC). New Mexico, Wyoming, and other states require entering a lottery. I would focus on hunting Colorado, easier to obtain tags. Focus on an outfitter that offers hunts on private lands located in general(OTC)-license areas.

You didn’t say budget so.....Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation in New Mexico. Inn of the mountain gods. You can take the wife too and they can go to the spa in between hunts. If y’all go post a report so us poor people can live vicariously through you!

You still need a tag. You either draw the tag or buy a landowner tag. Landowner tag plus guided hunt can get pricey.

During bow season its 4500 for 5 days. My base camp was next to an outfitter this year. His group was pissed when they found out we bought tags at walmart and were hunting the same land as they were.

I wouldn't hunt with a guide on public land. Find one that has access to private.

I did a 8 day guided trip into the Wyoming Thorofare this past season. It's public land but very remote and a long ride in to camp. Lots of elk and cost is around 6500 for the hunter. Can bring a non-hunter along for a reduced rate obviously. You can draw a general wyoming tag with 0 points in the special draw, but 1 would be for sure.

Go to Texas Hunting forum. There is a guide in New Mexico who just posted some private land rifle hunts. Looks like a solid outfitter.

NM for sure, find a guide and they will help you apply for the draw and what to do. In NM residents get 84% of the tags Guides get 10% and Non Residents get 6% so if you go with a guide in NM you have a better shot getting the tag. NM doesn’t deal with points unlike Colorado does! Colorado’s elk herd is depleted way over hunted do to the availability of OTC tags. Colorado is a great place to go hunt and learn to elk hunt That’s about it. You can be successful there but it’s just really tough.
