Grinding/groaning noise turning left in a 2011 Tahoe: Failing wheel bearing?

Drove my son’s Tahoe last week and noticed it. Of course I ask him about it and he shrugs his shoulders.
Probable wheel bearing failure? We used to repack these back in the day but they now sell the whole hub assembly?

Wouldn’t be the wheel bearing if it’s only when you turn left would it?
Maybe a ball joint?

2011 you should be able to change it yourself.

It doesn’t happen all the time, only from a stop and turning left.

That’s the plan. Just trying to narrow down the possibilities.

There’s a number of things It could be. I would jack up the wheel you think is bad and spin it and check for play. If it is groaning you’ll have noticeable play and notice when you spin it. You can buy just the bearing I think but I would buy the whole ac delco assembly. If it’s 4wd I’d check the cv axle next.

I had that in a Z71 and it ended up being the hub assembly. Super dangerous if it wears to catastrophic failure. Especially if it happens at any kind of speed

Could be a cv joint though they usually make a popping noise. He didn’t leave it in 4 wheel drive did he?

Pretty sure it’s the ball bearings. It’s all ball bearings nowadays.

Jack it up on the ground and grab the left front wheel. Put a hand on the left side of the wheel and one on the right then try to rock it back and forth. If there is some play that is a good sign that you have a bad bearing. Next move your hands to the top of the wheel and bottom of the wheel and rock back and forth that way. If you have movement side to side and back and forth then it's pretty much the bearing.
You can also spin the wheel while it is up in the air and may hear a grinding noise, however a lot of times, bearing noise doesn't show up until at speed.

Sounds like a wheel bearing - especially if it occurs during a turn when the loads on the hub change.
Like someone else said: jack it up and grab the wheel at 12 & 6 to check for play.
Nowadays the bearing is part of the hub assembly and is easy to change. You can likely purchase a unit bearing (hub assembly) for $200 or so.

I had a bearing go out. Thought it was left side because heard it when turning left. The right one was actually the bad one.

This. ^
It is usually the opposite side you turn and hear noise.
At least it has been for me.

My wife drives a Tahoe and at about 10 years or so there are several things that start to go out under there. I just replaced her sway bar links and that got rid of one of the noises that was kind of a metal-on-metal sound when turning and going over bumps. Easy job. On our previous Suburban the first thing to go was the front wheel bearings. More difficult job but I did it at home. On a 2011 Tahoe, you will likely have to do at least one of those jobs, in my experience.
When you put the car up on stands and start moving the wheels and suspension parts, you should be able to find the issue.

It happens when you turn left but is the noise on left or right side?

Is it in the front or the rear?
could be differential related. my 2021 started groaning on cold mornings and there was a notice to dealers about the differential that fixed it.

Had a similar issue with Dodge Ram. Went through many new parts before ultimately the wheel bearing failed. Was the problem all along except it was turning right

Jacked it up and checked.
L-front has to side to side but no 12-6 play.
R-front has both side to side and 12-6 play.
