Yellow crowned night heron.

And you can eat bec croche or Ibis or whatever the hell you call them. But don’t get caught shooting them. Unless you’re around 12 years old and carrying a crack barrel .410. All they do is tell your dad in that case.

Just found this thread.
Never killed any Gros Bec but have been to suppers at camps where it was served and I can tell you it’s as good as anything you can eat. Cooked in a gravy over rice.
Best I ever had was when some friends raided a rookery where they harvested some that were too young to fly.
I’m pretty sure they were the large night herons.
I see them in my yard a lot and think about how good they are!

Watched a judge throw the book at two coonasses that shot 5 of them. That was a good 45+ years ago down in New Orleans. Was in court for to many teal myself. Was a kid and still had to pay a $250 fine and a good arse wiping.

The best eating are the babies. About the size of a dove when they are in the nest. Shoot the nest out of the tree and harvest the youngn's. I can neither confirm or deny that.

This is what we have always called gros bec. I have "heard" it is dang good eating. Appearantly it is actually a white ibis. The young ones are dark colored and they get white as they get older.

Another "so i've heard" dang good eating bird that people don't relize is what we always called a cow bird, technically cattle egret.

This is what I was talking about. I guess my old great uncles ate everything and called them all grosbec.

Y'all talking about "Flappy Sails"?

I hunted with some dudes that called basically all herons, egrets, grosbek, roseated spoonbills, etc. "Flappy Sails". I found it so funny, it stuck.
