Gun Store/Range Recommendation in Baton Rouge

Looking at buying a handgun for home defense.
I am not a total noob, but I am certainly far from experienced.
My wife is a total noob and while she isn't scared of guns. She is apprehensive about handling them.
We happened to be in Academy recently so we decided to check out a couple and let her handle a couple of options since we were there.
That was a mistake.
The girl behind the counter was useless and there were too many people around so it just freaked her out.
So looking for suggestions of local shops or even a particular sales person at a shop that might be good at putting her at ease.
At some point I would take her to a first time shooter type class. The goal of course is to get her to where she is comfortable and confident in handling whatever we decide to buy.
Thanks in advance.

I would go to Bowie’ or FRC range. Both have pretty good CS and won’t treat you like a turd if you don’t talk the tacticool lingo. Jim’s is good for looking at inventory but have MSRP prices.

Go to frc and rent some of the stuff they have in the case. They even have a handgun only side of the range where its not as loud

Some of the ppl behind the counter will push for a revolver for your wife. Idk why they do that because it's usually a heavy trigger pull which results in worse accuracy. Also only 6 shots. They act like a woman can't handle a Glock or something. I don't know the places in BR but a place you can rent some and try. If she is scared they have some that have a trigger safety and also a grip safety. While I have a nightstand safe I also CC mine and feel more comfortable also having a grip safety. I have had some ppl say what if your shooting a weird way etc. with the grip safety. I've shot it every which way at the range and the grip safety was always pushed in.

I remember shopping 10/22's some years ago. I think retail was around $250 for the stainless I wanted. Academy had one for $225 and Jim's wanted $299. I try to shop small businesses, but they're crazy high. Same with ammo shortages. They'll have what you want, but will bend you over.

Do this first, then look at buying her a gun

Completely depends on the person, a revolver was the right choice for my wife, it is simple, she is proficient with it , she can load and unload it, she can hit a target with it, if there is FTF all she has to do is pull the trigger again,
For a semi auto she has difficulty racking the slide, has difficulty loading a mag, too many buttons ( mag release, slide release, safety) a FTF or failure to eject would freak her out,
We tried several options and a revolver was the right choice for her, got her a lady smith 38 and everyone is happy

Range USA has huge selection -- and prices equal to Academy.

FRC is severely overrated. Its has a weird tactical fudd vibe. Range USA is geared towards new shooters. You can get rentals included in a lot of the memberships and it is the cheapest way to try out new guns. I am not too fond of the the experience of the people at Range USA but the facilities are awesome and they cater to new shooters.
Please don't get a revolver for defense.

I heard FRC does a Ladies Night on Thursdays. Sounded like it was an introductory try of setting. May want to contact them and ask.

in the hands of someone who can proficiently operate it, not everyone can,
there is no single answer to the question of what gun is best for everyone, revolvers have their place

did not know they were making glocks and MP with hand grips the size of a revolver

but has decent sights
Okay, but in reality , unfortunately , in a self defense situation most will not use "good sights" anyway
quote:
has much lighter/better trigger
well the Lady smith I purchased is double action only, but if you want a light trigger get one that can be fired single or double action

hold 2-3 times as many rounds
a double stack pistol holding 12-18 rounds is getting pretty big at the hand grip

Okay

and makes bigger holes in bad guys
and a 10mm makes a bigger hole than a 9mm, all 3 can get the job done
