Hack and Squirt

Just wanted to share some hack and squirt observations. I have acres and acres of sweet gums that I am trying to get rid of. I use the Craig Harper cocktail and do this work in February and early March. It usually takes a year to 1.5 years for them to get brittle and start to fall and some stay alive and stump sprout. I treated a 2 acre section this September and I was surprised to see today that several are already falling or can be easily pushed over. It’s definitely hotter in September but you get a much better and faster kill. Ready to doze and burn.

I always prefer to do it in the fall. Heard a long time ago the trees start pulling sap down to the roots in preparation for winter and it pulls the poison down just the same making for a faster kill.

I used same cocktail on a 15 acre section in January as a test run on its feasibility on the whole property that had a good amount of timber removed in 2003 and has a lot of 10-15 year midstory. Burning same section in March of this year and will hopefully knock some over and have another burn next March. The goal is to get roughly 200 of 400 acres to a 30% canopy within 5 years, which is aggressive but doable

100% correct. Imazapyr especially works well in the fall. We spray it over young pine stands that are infested with sweet gums in Sept and Oct. When April arrives they just don't turn green and you can snap them off with your hands

I seem to get a better result in late summer/early fall.

Most things I read specifically recommend AGAINST hack and squirt in Feb/Mar.
