Honda Rancher oil change screwup

Howdy all,
Just performed first oil change on my Honda Rancher. Oil capacity is 3.8qts. I dropped old oil, changed filter, and started to add new oil. I could only get 2qts into the crankcase before it started to overflow. So, I bumped the motor to see if that drew it down and it did. I was finally able to get 2.5qts into the crankcase, but that’s it. Tried bumping it, nothing. Tried letting it run for 30 seconds, nothing. Took it for a 3 minute run down the road, nothing. Finally, put a long neck funnel into the crankcase and it took the remaining 1.5qts no problem.
My question, did I do any damage? Motor had half oil before I ran it for any amount of time and 2.5qts before I ran it down the road but not long enough to warm up.
No knocking, no ticking, starts just fine, runs just fine.
Thanks.

Man I’m no Rancher expert... but my 450s takes like 1.2qts. Seems a little high on the capacity. Are you sure it’s over 3qts??

100% positive. 2020 Rancher 420 with DCT trans.

Trans shares oil with motor on DCT trans. I will add, it shifts and drives just fine too.

PRO TIP: Honda says the oil capacity of the Rancher 420 is 3 quarts, but we found that can be a little too much. Pour in 2.5 quarts, replace the fill cap, run the engine for a couple of minutes, and then check the level. To check the oil level on the engine, don't screw in the fill cap.

You’ll be fine. Majority of people don’t even know on a Honda you’re not supposed to screw the dip stick to check the oil level. That sounds like a lot of oil for a Rancher though, which model do you have? Did you change the oil filter too?

I hear y’all, but the 2020 Honda Rancher 420 with DCT takes 3.8qts. Manual says so and so does the dealer.
Oil filter was changed too. Checked 3 times to ensure it was oriented correctly.

You have learned me something this morning over coffee. Thanx

I hear you. Just to be clear, does it say that’s the capacity at oil & filter change or disassembly? Still seems like a lot, not trying to argue. I just changed the oil on a 500 DCT and it calls for 3.1qrts.
Another tip, when filling with oil, leave the dip stick out. Helps the oil flow in the motor faster. Also, always pay attention to the oil filter on a Honda, some are one way filters.
I would put about 2 3/4qrts, run it for 5min (idle) and let it sit for 3min. Check and add if needed. Good luck with it.

I didn’t know Honda’s needed oil changes! haha
It’s been years since I changed mine. Guess I’ll order some oil and a filter.

On mobile, but I’ll quote the owners manual oil change capacity in a bit.
Will a 10 year veteran Honda mechanic now 100% assure me that my atv is okay?

I’m not a certified Honda mechanic but trust, you’re fine. Lol

Any last opinions on if I screwed up my 10 hour atv?

Borrowed my dad’s 2005 Rancher during the quarantine to give us another one to ride. I changed the oil, replaced the spark plug, and put a new air filter on it just because I wanted to make sure it was good to go.
This week my dad came by and I fired it up using the pull rope just for shits and giggles and it fired right up and was running like a sewing machine.
I mentioned that I needed to adjust the valves on a Rincon I put a new cam in during quarantine and he said he NEVER adjusted or took the Rancher in for a valve adjustment like you need to after break in. I know the Rancher needs a valve adjustment but we both agreed to leave good enough alone. If the Rancher was mine, I’d adjust them tomorrow.
A Honda atv is hard to beat. You didn’t hurt it a bit.

I chose not to adjust mine. It runs about $300 and lots of people say its not needed. Granted, lots say to get it done too. Im banking on it being a Honda and being fine without adjusting.
I believe that I am fine, just mad that I made such a dumb move.

2 years ago my nephew pulled his Honda Rancher into our shop and asked if I would change his oil. I pulled the drain plug out and there was at most 2 oz of old oil that came out. No idea how that motor was running as good as it was. Filled it up with new oil and he is still riding with no problems. He rides at least 4 hours every week and that thing does not even smoke. Honda’s are pretty tough.
