How much does it cost to have a pond dug?

Thinking about having a little fishing pond dug on the property. 1 to 2 acre pond tops.

Could be 3-5k per acre upwards of 10k per acre. So many variables.

pretty big pond, keeping the dirt onsite or hauling it off? Are you just using the dirt to make a dam in a valley or something or digging on flat ground?

I think there's a thread in the FAQ about this. NascarFan did a writeup on it

Probably haul dirt off. Will be on flat land.

make sure you give the ducks a nice island to hide from predators.

Yeah that was a running joke for several years around here.

look for dirt contractors building neighborhoods or housing in the area. you may be able to find someone to dig it for the dirt as long as you arent in a rush.

First thing I would do is get some core samples done to make sure you pond will hold water. Your local Ag extension may offer a free service do do it.

I was just gonna tell you to get the site checked to make sure it will hold water. I was preparing to expand our pond a few years ago. The natural resource people came out and did a site survey for me. They found sand/gravel a few feet below the top soil. That saved me a bunch of money.

We thinned a lot of old mature pine trees and had to use every penny from the timber to build a 1.5 acre pond. It can be very expensive. Dirt movers like to be paid a lot of money

How much land do you have OP? You should be able to give the dirt away but likely can sell it. Then hire a dozer guy to come in and create the actual pond for you.

Check out Clyde Tipton's posts on building his pond. Very interesting. Yeah, Nascar Fan was a good sport about the ribbing he took on his pond. One of the best threads ever on the board!

Do you know what the difference is between a pond and a lake?
If you are buying ...it is a pond
If you are selling ...it is a lake
If you are buying ...it is a pond
If you are selling ...it is a lake

$3.50
Is he still posting here?
Edit to add: Looks like he has been MIA since October, 2019. I think I know where his house is and honked at him a few months ago when he was outside.

Better to use dirt buckets because it will pack the soil and you’ll have less erosion and the pond won’t silt in nearly as fast.
Also what is the water source? If you need a well then drilling one is not cheap either.
