Orientation, load distribution, static or dynamic load?
Posted on 10/11/16 at 3:18 pm to doublecutter
How long are you planning on it holding this weight? The problem with timber, and especially soft wood (go ahead with the dick jokes), is that it is susceptible to failure due to loading over time. In other words, it can support a lot of load for a short period, but that same load will cause sagging and eventual failure over time.
Give me some more details on what you need to do and I can help you more.

So before we overengineer the shite out of this thing, what are you looking to do here? Build a shelf to put some pots and pans on, or deck the top of a bridge?

Vertical, load basically in the middle half, dynamic.

Holding up a double mattress in your dorm room?
Posted on 10/11/16 at 3:32 pm to Boudreaux35

This is what I am building. Want to make it 3 ft long, and want to know if a 1x12 would work on the seat portion. So, figure a person sitting on it.

aren't you glad you asked here...

Don't know what kind of friends you have but a 1x on flat ain't holding up none of my podnuhs.
You need an additional board (2x4) under the middle vertically to make it like a T beam and then it would be plenty good. Wouldn't be able to see it without looking for it either.

I would run a 2x4 on edge centered underneath it. It will crack without any support with anyone other than a kid sitting on it.

That sounds like a good idea

What Downshift said.
Probably get away with smaller than a 2x4 also. If you want it to look nicer, like the picture and use oak, I would make the vertical piece a 1x2. The important part is that it needs to be connected to the flat board soundly, OR make sure that the vertical piece is supported on both ends by the legs of the chair.

You're friends must not be as fat and drunk as mine are
2x4 is bare minimum for EVERYTHING.

The one in the pic is made out of 1" cypress that was given to me by the person I built it for.
And my daughter wants me to build one for her, but I don't want to spend $125 for cypress.

Could you build it out of cedar? I think 1x12 cedar boards at lowes are like $30 for 8' and they're pretty nice on the finished side.
