Okay, for those that don't know, these aren't NFA Firearms.
Mossberg 590 Shockwave
Remington 870 Tac-14
Now, on to the clarification part. I've come across some of the different modifcations you can do to these things, and the most interesting is a pistol brace you would normally see on an AR-15 pistol platform. if this is completely legal, this changes the game for short barreled shotguns and home defense.
I'm pretty sure the fore grip restrictions would follow suit so that would make the first image below illegal. any lawyers here know what the rule is on this firearm with pistol braces?

If it is over 26" OAL the VFG is OK. You are correct that as long as you don't conceal one of those guns on a person they are not NFA items. Being concealed on a person would make it an AOW.

where are the dimensions pulled from? Rear of pistol grip or rear of brace/tube?

recently talked to a salesman about these guns in particular at the Slidell gun show. He said there is essentially a loophole that allows these guns to be categorized in a way that makes them legal. They're not shotguns so they do not have to meet the length requirements to be legal in. I'm speaking in regards to Louisiana. It can vary from state to state.
On the last pic, apparently as long as you keep the fore grip lower on your arm, it's legal, but becomes illegal if you raise it up and put it on your shoulder.
The guy talked for about 20 minutes and we laughed at how ridiculous the whole thing is.

After doing some research, Remington actually sells s model with the pistol grip and brace.
Remington Website
As far as shouldering, I thought the ATF acknowledged that if you don’t physically/permanently alter the brace, you can shoot however which way you want to shoot.

I had a sales person on a military base tell me, while I was checking out the mossberg, that the only way that thing was legal in length was the lanyard nub on the end.
