What do I need in terms of rod, reel, line, hooks, lures, etc.?

You need a side scan or down scan unit so that you can fish everybody else’s brush piles on Toledo bend. Fish smart, not hard.

Salter's jig pole, assorted tube or hair jigs, a good depth finder.
Option B would be a spinning reel with a shiner under a cork during the spring.

if they ain't fishing it then it is fair game. same as a stand left on public land. if somebody ain't in it then it is fair game to sit for an evening. I usually leave a thank you note, though.

Personally a standard Zebco 33 rod and reel combo is just fine when using a tube jig or beetle spin. If I fish with a cork, I use a slip cork. It's much easier to throw and can throw alot most more accurate next to lilies and cypress trees

Do like every other lazy fisherman does now and find a facebook page and message boards to get all of your info.
Ask for a pin on map to the canal, if they're biting, and what color to use.

Cork
Black and chartreuse tube jig
Jig head
6 lb line
Small spinning reel with 6’ ultralight rod

Profit
Knowledge of sac-a-perch being in the water you are fishing

Frick that shite. Get some yo-yo's, some hooks, and a bucket of shiners.
Also, plenty of White Cans or in this weather, dark water.

That's all variable depending on the body of water and how you want to go about it.
But, a spinning reel with a fairly light action rod, and a crappie jig of some sort will get you started.

They should start spawning now.
I'm not sure where you will fish but if there's cypress trees put a jig about 3 - 4 ft under a cork and easily set it up next to the trees. Fish all around the trees not just right at the base.
You can also use small minnows
Get a long crappie pole so you don't have to get very close
See yo yo idea above also, I used to love to do this

If you dont tan well
tube jigs
If you sport a year round tan
shiners
Also, the lightest tackle you can stand. They pretty much take the bait like a housecat would do, very gentle.
In south Louisiana, clean water and structure is the key
Also, patience. Whole lot of patience
ETA:
Or you can just put shiners on yo-yo's, but that more for simply catching and eating and not fishing

Get a 10' crappie pole, assortment if tube jigs, 4-6lb mono, unweighted cigar corks and a lot of patience.

Rod: Wally Marshall Pro series or Speed Shooter 6' L
Reel: Daiwa Legalis LT 1000
Line: either straight 4/6 lb mono or 6 lb Nanofil to swivel then 6lb flouro
Jig heads and bodies: Garland Overbite heads and baby shad bodies.
Either under cork or straight to jig depending on depth and cover.

I agree with all of this, but instead of the 33, get a Zebco 22 if you can find one. Its a little bit smaller than the 33 and is a little bit lighter.
