Lake Calcasieu/Big Lake Fishing guides rec’s

Need recommendations on guides for Big Lake. Also what is the best time of the year to go. Plan on buying a trip for my father as a birthday gift. His birthday is at the end of September. So I was thinking of booking for October or November. I normally fish Grand Isle, Fourchon, or Dularge. Not familiar with Big Lake at all.
I really want this to be a home run trip and catch some of those big specks. Each trip with him is treasured. He is still healthy but getting up there in age.
Thanks in advance.

WHATEVER YOU DO.....DO NOT GO WITH PICOU lol.
That dude is the biggest joke on big lake. Went with him during primetime (October when the birds are working and fish are jumping in the boat) we managed to catch 13 keepers and he wanted to focus on redfish and couldn't even put us on those. We got back to the landing with everyone bringing in ice chests full and he was like yea man rough day. Charged us full price for a mixed bag of 13 fish (3 people plus him fishing). Literally could've brought my kayak and had a better day by myself.

Thank you. It’s probably just as important if not more important to know who NOT to book with.

Your timing should be good for bird fishing and possibly larger trout if our season improves from last year. There are plenty good guides on the lake, just have to pick one. Where you plan to bed down should be taken into account for max time on water and road traffic as will time of the week.
If the fish are truly under the birds this year, it will turn into a zoo. Also suggest you try to fish more than one day in case the weather becomes an issue.
Would love to be able to take my dad fishing one more time.
Gimme your email addy and i will forward a list of guides i would spend my money with.

If staying on the West side in Hackberry.
Josh Kaczynski with Redtail Charters
Matt Griffith with Trout Mouth Charters
Both have nice lodging available on the water/canal.

I would not go with tub shrimp soaking Jeremy Waltrip. I'd stay on Hackberry side and look up Anthony Busceme with Black Dog guide Service. 713-283-4258. Takes care of all of our company outings and its just a pleasure to deal with. Retired Marine Veteran on top of it.

I’ve been with Lee Daughdrill with Calcasieu Point Charters and he is a really knowledgeable guy. Andrew Soileau with High Tide Charters will also put you on fish. The Poe’s who run Big Lake Charters are some of the OGs out there.
KemoSabe posts on here and guides some on the side as well.

Yep...there are some really good ones and some really bad ones. I'd be willing to bet Kemosabe's list is pretty accurate.

Another recommendation for Busceme. I first hooked up with him (literally) when he worked for Hackberry R&G. Super cool dude and correct, he is a former Devil. He runs trips out of the Nugget some and he knows Big Lake in and out. He is also a pretty damn good duck guide over in Winnie but I’ll never let him know that personally.

AB is as good a dude as they come, lets his skillz speak for themselves.
Honestly, if you have some skillz the time of year you want to book is probably the easiest time to fish the lake. Sunrise, you should be sitting in Turners waiting for it to come up and move south from there. Catch an incoming tide and hit the ship channel rocks for sheep, reds, trout.
**No such animal as a Former Marine**

You don't have to have many skillz because even I can catch them in November

Thanks but it’s poor form to pimp yourself on forms, thus the referrals.

I spent money at this dudes place 4 years in a row and I never met him or his wife. Their guides are pretty solid, house is nice, but he isn’t available at all. I’ve heard from those that have actually met him that he’s an arrogant POS and thinks he’s better than everybody.
I won’t go back and spend any more money at his place. There are many other guys that will appreciate your business.

I can’t speak to him in particular, but it is always aggravating when you book a charter expecting a specific guide and you get passed off to a sub.

Lee Daughdrill with Calcasieu Point Charters works hard to put you on fish and is an all around cool guy.
