I’m going sailing for a few days, leaving from Tchefuncte River and we will sail around/anchor on west side of causeway. Is that area of the lake brackish enough to hold specs/reds or is that mostly fresh water? It’s already awkward enough fishing from a sailboat so I’d at least like to at least target the right fish.

The entire lake has almost no saltwater these days. I live closer to the Rigolets area, pretty fresh and was catching a few trout on the grass beds about two weeks ago. I haven't fished west of the causeway in years but the trout and reds do make their way over there.

Pink and black crappie jigs bounced off the bottom, fill the boat with croakers. Fun fishing.

Gill nets are very effective and don’t interfere with cocktail consumption.

There should be some specks in the lake along the causeway. By October they start moving back in.

Specs and Reds hold pretty close to the pilings of the Causeway. I doubt you'll want to be that close in a sailboat. Plenty of catfish to be had with shrimp on the bottom. Might pick up an occasional Red. Small treble hooks with shrimp are also money for croaker as poster stated above. My kids favorite fishing is for croaker in the lake. It's non stop.

I live on the lakefront near where you're asking and occasionally we'll see a redfish come through but not a lot lately.

Trout will be moving in steadily as the water temps drop but they'll always be tight to structure.

Sounds like a fun trip though. One day I'll take up sailing and mimic that journey.

Are they basically everywhere in the lake or do they hang around structure? Live or dead shrimp?

You will catch more around structure, but you don't have to be right up beside it. Dead shrimp are fine. I rig the hook above a 1 oz. sinker directly in line so you can feel the tiny bite when you have some tension on the sinker.

When do the big White trout start getting thick in the Lake?

For white trout I look for deeper cuts and channels where rivers and bayous enter the lake anywhere from mid October to around the beginning of December. You may find white trout under birds all summer long, especially around the eastern parts.
