My old man has always and forever had really good hunting dogs. As a kid he raised and bred beagles....and over the past 20 years or so he has had jam up jack russel's used for squirrel hunting. His last pup died this past winter and he says he isnt sure he is going to get another. I know deep down he wants one, his pups are his companions, even sitting in the boat with him while he fishes - but he may not know where to look for a good one...and may not think he wants to train another.

I would like to surprise him w a pup. If its already trained/partially trained - even better. Breed doesnt really matter....we have had cur's, jack russells, etc.

Where should I look around Louisiana & Texas? I travel these areas and could pick one up....not crazy about driving way off to get one tho.

Thanks much gents.

ETA: talked to a buddy of his and he thinks we need to go the trained route. Age doesnt really matter, but one that can hunt now. Thanks

There are a few Facebook groups for squirrel dog classifieds. I'd look there first.

Pretty sure I saw your Dad last week in our hometown (if you're who I think you are).

I bought a Kemmer cur pup from a guy that has good hunting stock in Oakdale. She's already treeing at 8 months old. They're very smart and bond to their owner very fast. Also have natural treeing ability and pick it up on their own very quickly.

Email me at scwtig on gmail if you want his number. If he doesn't have any to sell right now, he knows a lot of squirrel men around the Ellic area that may. At this point in the season, I'd recommend him getting a puppy to bond with during the year, and he'll be able to kill squirrels with it next year.

Yea a few still do.
Good luck on the puppy finding.
Charles Fasola in Angie has a pretty good bunch of line bred Kemmers too.

thanks JJJ.... i found a pup in St Martinville, but after talking to one of dads hunting buddies - if I am gonna get one for him, he thinks it needs to be hunting. After thinking about it, I agree.

Have had squirrel dogs for 20 plus years. Best route is to go ahead and get a trained dog. Unless you are able to fool with the puppy every day in the woods the trained dog is the best. Even with a puppy you never know what the end results will be. Going to be hard to find a Jack Russell cause most hunters are hunting mountain curs or fiests. Go to squirrel dog central or squirrel haters websites
