Louisiana Duck Lease Worth the Current Money?

I recently read several posts about the past Louisiana duck season. Are the costs and expenses of a LA duck lease worth the current investment or is a better deal to spend the same money on out of state guided hunts? Thanks.

That’s a very good question. Depends on the cost of the lease, how many days you can realistically hunt per season and if you can bring guests. Also how many quests you are allowed to bring and if you utilize for business purposes. If you are the only person primary going a guided hint might be more advantageous as you can go when you like and the birds will be plentiful if you choose the outfitter wisely.

NO! Figure an hour drive min and half a house note per year min for anything descent and that’s a WAG. Did it in 2005-2006 and it only worked because there was four splitting the drive. We killed on avg 20 birds per trip but spent a ton of money for those birds.

I just hire a guide for the few times I go per year.

We have been in the same rice field blind for 10 years at 5k. We are done now. Going back to boat hunting

How many birds would you say y’all killed? Just curious to know how we stack up

This year? Maybe 45. I think our top year was a few hundred. This is in Whiteville. First split two limit hunts opening weekend, nothing since really of substance.

Gootness Baw, 10 yrs @ $5k and the best ever was two hundred?? For me it’s more about time wasted driving and sitting, our worst year in GC was 300 but was mostly mallards.

I’ve been duck hunting for the better part of 40 years and have done both. I would say that it totally depends on your particular situation.
If you have time and the energy to do work during the off-season, like building blinds, brushing blinds, rigging decoys and have some buddy’s that you enjoy that kind of thing with, you should try to find a decent place to rent a blind.
If you don’t have time or don’t enjoy that kind of thing, you might be better off taking a couple of guided hunts per year.

Grand Chenier, marsh leases are more consistent on avg but more work keeping them up. Drive time was 60 min and boring alone so I gave it up, also difficult going back to office after leaving at 3:30.
We had a carpool group for the 05 & 06 seasons to pecan island so rotating who drove made hunting 7 days a week very doable.

I can kill the same amount of ducks hunting the basin, that I cant hunting a pure duck lease, and I dont pay 3k a year for it.

In my view it depends on how good the lease is. I was part of a lease from 2005-06 season to 2018-19 season. We had a camp and 4 rice field blinds SW of Gueydan. At first, we had good hunting...some seasons really good. But, then things fell off. The last 2 seasons we had the lease, duck hunting in the area was bad. We had fun at the camp, but from a duck hunting standpoint, it wasn’t worth the time/money investment.
Last weekend I went with a group on guided hunt in SW La. marsh and we had a good hunt. While in the area, I drove through Lake Arthur/Gueydan countryside. I was amazed at the lack of ducks. That area used to be loaded.

It is just bad. Killed one this morning. Got some “ not bad” replies when asked how we did.
Just a few years back woulda got an “ouch”

Take the money you spend on the lease, clothing, ammunition and divide by the number of ducks you kill. It that number seems reasonable for the enjoyment you've gotten then yes, it's worth it. You know people spend thousand to vacation in Europe. So it may be worth it.

I've had three duck leases over the years after mostly hunting state draws. Some great days, usually not. All in southeast MO. We'd drive almost 3 hours to spend the night in some pretty crappy motels to do it with & without the lease,
Dollar wise it's cheaper to sling some frozen Cornish hens with a 2 man slingshot and shoot them until you're tired.
The camaraderie with my friends is why I still do it. The older I get, the less I hate waterfowl.
