Garmin vs Simrad: best way I’ve come up with to explain it is Apple (Garmin) vs Android (Simrad). Garmin is super user friendly, for the most part everything is plug and play, active captain app is nice, all around easy to use. With GSD sonar box can have good sonar capabilities too. Very easy installation.
Simrad has a little more customization? (not sure that is the right word) as in lot of things you can change and play around with. Not quite as user friendly as Garmin.
My train of thought if you are on the fence between Garmin and simrad…If you have Yamaha engines get Garmin, if you have mercury engines get Simrad. Only reason I say that is because Garmin has a good dedicated Yamaha interface, and Simrad has a good dedicated mercury interface when engines are connected to network.
Spot on and while I am a long time Simrad user, Garmin is far more user friendly.
Iridium Sat Phone is a must.
FLIR can pick up those little duck boats near you that Radar sometimes does not. Regardless, don't run the River in fog.
And, don't run the River in fog.

Your boat sounds great, congratulations and good luck.

Sat weather is great but are you really going to push it in a 26’ boat? I would just not push it.
Me delima every time I go out. How much and how far to push my 25'
I tend to lean on the side of caution at times when others go full send out there.

My problem is trusting the engine enough to get wild.

Yeah valid concern.
I’ve been out 20 miles in a single engine bay boat with a pretty new motor and it made me nervous.
That being said with the 1000s of hours on multi engine boats I have, I’ve only ever had one motor issue, and it was electrical and they both went out anyway
If someone ever invites you an a trip and they have a Honda generator onboard plugged into onboard charger to keep batteries charged while offshore, I’ve learned you should just say no lol
Which brings me to another good thing to keep with you on boat… Noco jump start pack. If batteries are set up where you can emergency parallel probably won’t ever need it, but still nice to have just in case

Most post on here have covered everything. I'm a Simrad guy, 2 - 12" screens with radar, adding a new Airmar transducer and 36v MK this winter. I've come to learn that a good transducer is about the most important non safety item on a offshore boat. I went with a Bivy Stick over the Garmin for sat communications, no issues thus far with it. I was set on getting auto pilot on mine but after running it for a year I don't really see a need, the Cat hull tracks awesome with little to no effort, point it in the right direction and let it go.

Y'all have been great- and CP3- if Legendary doesn't kill me on this, I would love to talk to you and see if you would consider doing it...here's what I asked for...
Sionyx Nightwave Camera- will use ipad as monitor
Garmin 8612 XSV
Garmin GT51 MTH Transducer
Garmin GMR 24 XDH3 Radome
Engines NMEA 2000 Connections
Garmin Reactor 40 Autopilot
Minn Kota Riptide Terrova
Starlink Internet
ACR V6 EPIRB with HRU
Superior Coastal Surge Liferaft with Case on Hardtop
Front Facing LED Lightbar or Spotlight
Rear, Stbd., Port LEDs for spreaders
SeaDek Install w/ Pursuit Logo
I think, think, maybe I can get it all done for a bit over $35K. Any guesses?

I haven’t seen a dealership ever come close to the quality that a dedicated marine electronics guy can do. CP3 can hook you up. If he can’t I’ve got a buddy who can.

If you plan on doing any deep dropping or swordfishing you’re going to want another transducer. You can keep that one for shallower stuff like tuna fishing and whatnot, but you’re going to want to add atleast a 1kW low band ducer for deeper stuff. Could maybe get by with medium band. Airmar b175L or b175M would be a good addition.
Or, scrap the GT51 and get an Airmar M265LH or B265LH (only difference between M and B in installation style. One is yellow box in bilge one is fiberglasses into a pocket in hull essentially). This is roughly same price range as the B175’s, but you get both a low (deeper readings) and a high (shallower readings) band in one unit. And an XSV Garmin screen can power it without a separate sonar module (GSD which is another $1k+). I ran a M265LH on our contender. Gives you 1kW high band and 1kW low band chirp. Probably best combo 1kW ducer you can get in the price range. Worked perfect for us for pretty much everything

Another thing to keep in mind with Syonix camera, from what I have heard (not my first hand experience, never used one) there is a slight delay in the video image cast to IPad/screen. So it’s tough to navigate based solely on the camera view. Like I said I had NiteTrack on our contender which is similar night vision technology to syonix, but with a real time image because it’s a video input direct to Garmin, and I never used it. Just my input.

I’d have to price the equipment out, but at first glance I would think what you listed plus labor is definitely in your price range. $35k seems pretty high for what you listed actually. I spent like $10k less than that outfitting our 33 contender with all new electronics and that included all new wiring and everything. Essentially starting with bare hull. Granted the labor was free because I was the one doing it

You can search “contender rebuild” on here if you want to see the build thread. I posted it a while back.

My problem is that I’ve taken my bay boat 50 miles out a number of times- so this thing will be like having a Freeman for me. I know I need to probably temper that behavior.
Nothing wrong with that on a 26ft boat. I’ve done 65 on my 27ft and it’s perfectly safe.
But, I really think the 2 safest moves are to go in the middle days of fronts, so never the first or last day. Which isn’t easy I know.
But more importantly, buddy boat. It’s not that hard to post online or only go with friends. Which again, now you have double the crew to show up. It’s not always best, but I’d sure as hell rather sit dry in a 26ft boat then bobbing with a life vest and epirb.
Personally I think a 18” radar is much more useful then a night vision camera. You can use it for fishing, weather, and boat traffic both day and night. Camera is just for navigating at night.

We had 50” LED bar on boat. Never used it. Probably won’t ever put one on boat again.
Pretty sure FLIR doesn’t really work that well in fog, another reason I say just stick with Radar. But like I said, if you feel like spending money just to spend it get FLIR
1000%
Get a cordless spotlight if you wanna look at something, we keep one and use the hell out it. Also backup if you power down in an emergency.
I would add 2 bilge pumps with 20 ft wire to gator clips. Can't tell you how many people have saved their arse with these.

l thinking to get the raft and put its case in top of the hardtop.
I have a 6 person viking life raft. It is heavy as shite. I would not put it on the t-top. It will make the center of gravity higher in the boat and probably encourage more tippy/rocking behavior. Also that would be total sonofabitch to get up there and/or get it down. Go see one in person before buying. They are big and very very heavy. I have a 40' center console and I put mine in a compartment where a large ice chest would normally go. I would not bring one if my boat was any smaller. It takes a ton of room and again is very heavy. Good offshore life jackets are way more important.

100% agree. Not nearly enough room on 26ft boat for a life raft. Go with life jackets and call it a day.

If I got carried away and bought a nearly 30’ express that weighs 10,000 lbs. does that change the opinion on the raft on the hard top
Because I drove 7 hours away yesterday to see something that I always “kinda, sorta thought was the coolest thing ever” and now my checkbook has one less check in it and I have a text message going with a boat surveyor.

Type I life vest with an ACR Personal Locator Beacon (PLB). LINK /
The new beacons have AIS and RLS (return link service) which is a confirmation message sent back to the beacon to let the beacon owner know that Search and Rescue has received their emergency distress signal.

Yup.
We normally have:
- Auto EPIRB on boat
- Life Jackets
- an ACR PLB within hands reach
- ACR RapidDitch bag with EPIRB, lights, protein bars, water, and other survival gear.
- VHFs with built in GPS for DCS SOS calling

On an express diesel inboard? Yea there is room on the roof. Also on the front deck for a valise life raft case bolted down. The radar should go on the roof and probably will take up most of the space there, but sure that is an option. Again, these rafts are very heavy, I wouldn't want to deal with one on any boat roof but once you get to an express diesel, there is a lot more room on a roof.

Need deckhands?
Great thread, my fishing buddy just bought a late model 26’ TwinVee and is going through this exact list of decisions.
