Oklahoma is one of the states that it's illegal to harvest this turtle.

I'm confused...

IUCN Red List- Alligator Snapping Turtle

I think someone inaccurately wrote threatened, because even the federal register entry that placed the AST on the CITES list stated that the IUCN classified it as vulnerable.

That's no 100lb turtle.

I was thinking the same thing. I’ve seen at least 2 in my life that were bigger than that, one was on a set hook in Cane River. He could have pulled our boat all over the river the way he was moving.

That’s a 75lb turtle and anyone guessing age is full of shite. They grow to 35 lbs in the first 8 years. After that it’s highly variable. I know I can put 1 lb per week on one in captivity. All these “civil war” turtle stories are silly. If they lived that long they would be crawling all over the highway because there would be so many of them.

Well, that's not how it works. Just because they can live that long doesn't mean many of them make it. It's rough out there in nature. You're probably right about random people guessing the age of a specific turtle, but I have no reason to doubt science on the age it says these things can attain.

Hell there's a tortoise alive today that was 50 years old in 1882 when he was brought to Saint Helena. LINK

In 2017, it was discovered that Frederica, the tortoise he has been regularly mating with since 1991, previously assumed to be a female, is probably actually a male.[8]

If you get a chance to stop by Bass Pro Shop in Denham Springs there's a 197lb Snapping Turtle in the tank there. It's the biggest I've ever seen. The sign reads it was 136 when captured 10 years ago. She must be eating well in captivity.

So, they really didn't discover anything.

I guess I was being specific to the over-abundance of the "civil war" turtle stories. I too do not doubt they live a very long time, I just don't believe there are that many out there that live that long.
