Outdoor Sink - Septic Barrel???

I'm planning a little expansion of my patio area and I am contemplating installing an outdoor sink. I am not sure how or where I would tie into the sewage, so I had the idea to run the drain into a perforated plastic 55 gallon drum buried in gravel a couple feet underground. Wont' be putting anything substantial down the drain so I figured this would work perfectly fine.
I ran the idea by my dad and his response was that it would probably work great and it would also be "highly illegal"
oops!
So my question to the OB...any other ideas for installing an outdoor sink that do not involve tying into the sewer?
Also, how likely do you think I would be to get caught if I put my septic barrel, and what would be the penalty? Fine, jail time, execution by firing squad???

You don't need a septic barrel for gray water, just run the line into a leach field in the yard, the barrel isn't needed...

OK so after a little googling of leach field...
I would just dig up an area, fill it with gravel, and run the drain into that?
Thanks for the suggestion.

Depending on where you live, codes will differ. Check with the planning commission to see what you can do legally.
Then do whatever you want. Dry wells work, as do leech fields, just depends on what you want to do.
ETA: If you are doing a leech field, it might be just as cheap to find a sewage cleanout, and pipe into that (what I did for my outdoor sink).

just run the drain to your neighbors yard and let them deal with it.

Also google french drain. Generally is a lenght of perforated poly pipe surrounded by aggrivate and covered with dirt and grass. Down side is these can get clogged up due to roots, driving tractor/mower over them, and don't send solids down the drain.
Work great for what you need though.

french drain.
yes this seems like a simpler version of my barrel idea...would probably go this way if not tying into a clean out
Thanks all.

a french drain is traditionally used to move water from an areas that congregates water to an area the doesnt. But i guess you could revers that and have a drain that goes to a french drain that disperses the water, but then that just is a leach field.

Yep...

For my ODK sink drain, I just dug a say 4 foot trench, drilled holes in the 2" PVC and buried it.
No problems, its just gray, cleaning water from the sink.
And covered with gravel, then dirt.

correct, just giving him other names to "google" that will do what he needs done. not getting into the technicality of what each is intended.

That seems excessive. I did one with a laundry basket filled with stones and wrapped in that porous cloth you put under flower beds. Buried it with the drain hose running into the basket and it lasted years until I sold the house with zero issues. It's not sewage so I don't see it being "highly illegal" either. It is on par with washing your car in the driveway and letting the soapy water run off into your yard.

I'm doing what all my neighbors do, run the line straight into the back ditch. I'm not pouring motor oil or cyanide it so it will be fine.

Yep. Glad I asked on here...I think Dad was thinking along the lines of an actual septic tank (ie blackwater)...regardless I think a 4" PVC French Drain/Leach Field will work for me.
Thanks OB
