Pond Digging cost estimates

I've been tossing around some ideas for developing some land I will soon own. 5.5 acres of cane fields. I'll have an option for another 5.5 adjacent to it on the same tract. Also a couple of other tracts of family land I may pursue to purchase.
Anyway, I'm considering digging about a 2 acre pond to stock with fish and maybe build a homestead (gardening, chickens, ducks, etc) as I head towards retirement.
Has anyone recently had a pond dug of this size? and what was the approximate cost? I really don't want to buy an excavator and turn around and sell it. Another option would be to rent one and dig it myself. I would also like to keep ~half of the dirt to build a pad for a shop and other structures.
The land is about a half mile from Bayou Lafourche so I'm not sure what/ where the water table is and how that will affect the depth of the pond.
Any insights would be appreciated.

first order of business is a soils boring and report.
any getotechnical engineer can do it for you
you need to know where the clay layer is, if any

Always wondered about this. There is an ole baw from around Columbia that made his own little two duck ponds that would normally flood a bit and hold woodies, and planted some stuff in it and made a water level maintenance system and it looks badass. I'm guessing you would have to get approval for doing that even if its fairly small and private property?
He uploaded videos of the progress and upkeep and some hunts but I think he did the work himself but I have no idea how much it cost. Probably not cheap, but probably cheaper to rent the equipment and do it yourself than pay someone to do it (although he could have owned that equipment in the first place as that whole area is ag land).

Get plenty estimates. Cost will vary a lot. Cost will depend on if you are keeping the dirt. Selling the dirt . How much dirt you have to move. If you can get someone to show up and do it. Good luck.

Go find a good pond builder on the pondboss forums. You can get a dirt mover anywhere anywhere but they don't necessarily know how to design a pond for you property. I am going to do something in the 3 acre range in the next few years and will 100% pay for a pond builder to arrange things.

$6/cy to dig and spread onsite
If they can sell it they will do it for free but it will take much linger

Baw has a great channel

Yes. Because of watching that channel I know where to position the pond to catch the run off from the property.
I'm just trying to figure out is this going to cost me $5k, $10k, $20k, or more.

You won’t have a single little dozer at your place for a week for less than $5k.

I rented equipment and dug pond myself, but I worked for the company I got the eq from. I only paid to have excavator and steer delivered/picked up about $250. 3/4 acre took me ten days to dig. Probably around $800 in fuel. Digging is the easy part. It’s the dirt that’s a pain. You would be shocked the amount of dirt a pond will produce. Moved dirt for house pad and filled an unneeded drainage ditch on property.
My opinion wouldn’t be a 2/5 pond of your land. 3 acres isn’t a lot of room for a house, barn, shop, and animals. Sounds crammed.

It’s all fascinating to watch. The wildlife that the pond has brought to the property is really cool.

Find out where your Parish USDA Soil Conservation office is located. You can find out everything you need to know about your soil, pond possibilities and pond building for free at taxpayer expense.

I’m getting one dug currently in south LA, keeping most of the dirt which they are spreading around my place and selling what’s left over. My cost is $5/yard on what is spread. And yes, the amount of dirt that comes out adds up really quick.

And more money than he knows what to do with. That pond must have cost him two trillion dollars.

20 years ago but WLF came out for free just took several core samples down about 5 feet - got clay and they said ok ponds been good ever since - i dug 1 acre 6 feet deep moved dirt around acreage- cost $8k dozer guy said he had dug some ponds before and he did good - had hard rain and it filled in one day

So it cost you 8k?
Done with only a dozer?
How many days to dig the pond?

If its in agriculture country than likely you can find someone with big tractors and pans. Most cost efficient process you will find. They may need a small dozer and ex for a day or 2 for dressing work but that's it. Don't worry too much about needing runoff in south louisiana, you get 5-8' of rainfall a year, your surface acreage of water will catch plenty.
Your main concerns will be soil types and depths of them as well as when you will hit your water table. NRCS will come do free probing and and analysis for you, but you'll have to get on their schedule.
Below is a link to some very basic pond construction info that LSU put out. It's not rocket science.
