Pontoon boat / party barge for spec fishing?

So I have the itch for a boat again. My last aluminum bass boat wasn't very family friendly but was great to fish out of. Been thinking about maybe a pontoon boat, the type that you can mount a trolling motor on the front of. Doesn't seem like they have a lot of draft and may be ok for inshore fishing it maybe a light chop. Anyone here ever tried this?
Obviously first use would be recreational and kids can catch bar fish or bream from but I really want something versatile

If you're gonna go away from a traditional bay boat, you need to step up to some sort of self propelled barge. Something with a diesel that generates it's own electricity so you can spend the night onboard.
A regular pontoon boat isn't suitable for even marsh fishing. You get in any kind of open bay with a 12 mph wind, and you're gonna be wet, and in danger.

no offense but that's not at all true
pontoon boats can handle chop very well, and are extremely safe and stable
OP I'm looking at them now to use as cargo transport and recreation in Matagorda bay. They are a great compromise for family fun and fishing

Didn't you have that Express? A good buddy did a lot of family fishing out of his, no worries.
What was the problem? I'm not a big fan of them, but just wondering.

I see some zipping around Lake Pontchartrain when it has a good chop going.

I had a friend that h ad a party barge when he had a camp in Empire. He had it for a few months during the Fall, and we would take it all the way to Yellow Cotton Bay and fish the deep hole. Very comfortable to ride and fish out of.
But he only had it a few months, he docked it under his camp and someone torched the camp. Boat and camp were totally destroyed.

Gotcha, didn't realize it was 17'.
I fish out of a 17' when alone and don't like company.
Good luck, I've seen those barges doing work so I'd be
optimistic.

Yeah, 17 ft bass boat won't be comfortable for a family of 4 no kinda way. I'm not a big fan of party barges my self but I understand their appeal. I would step up to a 21-22 ft center console. I fish my family if 5 out of one with no problems and pull the inner tube.

been on Lake Verret with a hard wind and really rough water in buddy's ...while it was a little wet the ride was quite smooth...
course Bennington makes some nice pontoon craft...

Party barge with three pontoons is a fun coastal boat, and you can grill and bring a small generator and a beer tap.

Know someone who recently sold his fishing boat and only has a party barge on the lift at the camp for the time being. Can't chase reds in the marsh and can't get out in the open on a questionable day. But we've definitely taken it out of cocodrie to catch reds and specks. Definitely good enough for live bait fishing. Can't get out to the islands, but can get out into the bay a little and hit some close pilings and well heads. Or you can hit up those drum holes. It's not the best, but it works. Probably the best option to take kids.

I saw 3 pontoon boats down in grand isle this weekend. One of them was catching some fish at Queen Bess.
