Was curious what manufacturer, grain a lot of you shoot out of your .35 Whelens?

I’ve always used the 200gr Hornady Superperformance (know a lot on this board hate Hornady) and have had excellent results with it.

The reason I bring it up is because I bought my brother a new .35 Whelen as an early Christmas gift because he lost his in a fire last year. He shoots 200 grain as well but I’ve spoke to several people over the years that swear by the 225 & 250 grain and actually had 1 guy at the range tell me he would not shoot anything under 225gr out of his .35 and that the 250gr is a better round.

Personally I’m partial to 200gr. and will continue using it but I Just wanted to see what some of you other bases shoot.

I use 180gr Barnes Vor-tx. Haven’t lost a deer yet and I find the recoil is a lot more manageable

I shoot 200 grain Federal Fusion. They shoot really well out my Pro Hunter Encore but I'm thinking about a change. Killed a deer and a pretty big hog with it last year, both never took a step when the bullet hit but both bullets fragmented bad! There would not have been much of a blood trail if they hadn't dropped.

35 whelen is notoriously picky about ammo gun to gun. You really have to just shoot a few and see what yours likes.

I am hoarding all I can of the federal premium 225gr bonded bear claws. They were discontinued last year and I bought several boxes, but federal just brought them back into production. Superformance shoots ok in my CVA, won't shoot 250 gr corelokts for shite. I have a box of the 180 gr Barnes TSX and may give them a spin this year.

I wanted to shoot 180gr but I let someone talk me into the 200 when I first got my .35 several years ago. I’ve had good luck with the 200gr but I might see if I can find some 180gr tomorrow and sight my gun in with 180s tomorrow afternoon or Friday. I’m dead on with 200gr so I shouldn’t have to adjust it much.

Only obstacle is finding them. Where is the most likely store I can find 180s tomorrow? I know they’ll probably be hard to find

I usually buy all of my ammo online now. Where are you located? Cabelas might have the 180s

I shoot a Nosler 200gr AccuBond hand load. Sorry that’s not much help to you.

However I did shoot the 200gr superformance ammo before I worked up a hand load. My only problem with those things is the recoil. They kick like a mule. Performance on deer was never a problem.

I live in the LP but my office is located in Baton Rouge. I’ll try Cabela tomorrow. I may as well go ahead and order some online as well. What site you suggest?

Midway for ammo. They have a free shipping code every now and again. Bowies in BR may have it, worth a phone call.

Hebert guns on Airline Hwy Prarrieville has Barnes bullets 180 grain. They ran a 2nd amendment sale back in August or September for $39.00 tax free.

Absolutely this. My CVA will not group any 200gr bullet no matter who makes it. I've had good luck with 225 & 250gr, plan to give barnes a try soon

I’ve shot the Remington 200 gr core lokt for years out of my 35 with good success. It’s fairly accurate and packs a wallop. I tried the Superformance and it didn’t group out of my gun.

I been buying Barnes 180gr TTSX online from double tap ammo. Seems to perform well in my CVA Scout.

From their webpage:

Exterior Ballistics: 200yd. zero
100yds - 1.6" high 2750fps / 3021ft/lbs
200yds - zeroed 2513fps / 2524ft/lbs
300yds - 7.1" low 2290fps / 2096ft/lbs
400yds - 20.8" low 2079fps / 1727ft/lbs
500yds - 42.4" low 1878fps / 1410ft/lbs

Caliber : .35 Whelen

Bullet : 180gr Barnes TTSX

Ballistics : 3000fps - 3597 ft./lbs. - 24.0" bbl. Rem 700

Mine wouldn't group 180 or 200 grain bullets for shite. And I'm not talking "oh, it won't shoot 1/2MOA," I mean it was all over the place.

Read about how picky some guns can be. Ordered some 225 Accubonds, and they group really well, so that's what I've stuck with them.

Another vote for the 180 gr. Barnes. I have a CVA Scout. It wouldn't shoot the Hornady 200gr. worth a crap. It was/is fine with Core-lokt 200gr. but I wanted something lighter.
