Propane tank recertification

I have a propane tank that I use as a spare that the date stamped on the tank has just expired. The guy where I get my tanks refilled told me that I could get it recertified, but he could give me no details on how to get it done.
Has anyone ever got a tank recertified? What is the fee and is it worth it? Who does recertification in the NOLA area?
This tank is like brand new, I hate to just toss it.

I've never had the propane attendant look for any expiration dates....I did have an old tank that was rusty and the geezer filling tanks said he'd rather not fill it. Since I was standing next to where the tanks were being filled I didn't argue.

What size is it? I swapped my small one out so I wouldn't have to deal with that

bring it to ferrellgas on airline and they will do it.
it can be expensive depending on if the valve has to be replaced
they will tell you what needs doing

If it's a normal size tank, just go swap it at any store and problem is solved.
My brother gave me some bigger cylinders a while back that his company had sitting around because they said they couldn't be filled because of the date.
I took them to LaSalle gas in New Iberia and the guy did a visual inspection for about $7 IIRC and then filled them. They put a sticker on the cylinder with the date of inspection.

This. This is exactly what I've done in the past. No questions asked. Let Walmart or the Blue Rhino people deal with the disposal or recert.

I actually got one recertified last month. Its much cheaper than I expected. It's a big tank and I got the valve changed, recertified and filled for $50. Where are you located?

When I have one that is about to expire/expired, I go swap them out.

Tanks are only good for 12 years.
After they are recertified, they're only good for 5 years.
Not really worth it on smaller tanks (5gal).
