anyone else do this?

I cut lower stems off and keep them cut all year.
Sure seems to me it makes plant produce more.

I'd curious as well. My okra plants are about 18 inches tall right now, growing like a weed in this summer heat

I prune mine.. Okra grow in between the leaf branch and main "trunk". Cut the branch when you cut the okra off as close to main "trunk" as possible. The plant will grow as tall as your head.

When it gets to tall, cut it clean off about 2' from the ground and it will start branching off again.

Okra will produce until the frost get them.

My grandmother recently asked if I had whipped my okra. Apparently, whipping it (which she described as literally beating it with a broom) makes it produce more okra and fewer branches/leaves. So I guess there is something to the idea of pruning it, although I've always had more than enough without doing so.

Old knee grow man I used to rabbit hunt with told me you had to whoop okra to make it grow. He'd whack the lower stems off with a stick as the plant grew. Me, I'm white. I take a pair of pruning sheers and snip them off. Seems to be a lot easier. But however you do it taking the lower stems off up close to the plant is the way to go.

There may be some validity to the whipping thing. In animals traumatic tearing and ripping causes vasoconstriction and thus less bleeding as compared to sharp dissection. This is why sheep herders use a plier like tool to crush and snip off the testicles at the same time instead of just cutting them off with a sharp knife. Maybe the whipping has a similar effect on the okra plants?

You could be right BP. I just assumed it was cause sticks are cheaper than pruning sheers. Coot probably grew the baddest assed garden of anybody I've ever knew so I'm certainly not gonna question his methods.

I googled Whipping Okra and that is the first thing that came up. Apparently Coot was not the only okra whipper.

The wife will probably be furious with me, but I am going to whip it tonight.

BTW, the pic in that link is right up there with the coolest I've ever seen.

Yeh I keep mine pruned too. Okra makes the most the hotter and drier it is. You get some cooler rainy days it barely makes any. I always tell people that ask me about gardening if you can't grow okra you need to give up gardening.
