PSE Nova compound bow - thoughts?

A friend of mine has offered to sell me his PSE Nova with case and a few accessories for $50.

Sounds like an incredible deal to me - as the bow has only been used for two seasons - and lightly used at that.

This would be my first bow, and my first deer season to bow hunt. Is this a decent bow to start out with, or should I bite the bullet, pony up some cash and buy something nicer?

Thoughts and/or reviews of the Nova are appreciated.

It's ancient, but for $50 would be worth getting. If you find you like shooting or bow hunting, you can always get something newer later.

My first bow was a Nova. I liked it alot. I ran into problems when the old arse string broke and couldn't find an aftermarket replacement. Bow was also 3 times heavier than the Kronik I'm hunting with now.

I would make a good bow fishing bow! If you want to get into bow hunting, spend a little money & get something better. You will enjoy shooting it alot more & will have better success.

It's a good beginner bow for $50. If it was good enough 15 years ago, it is good enough now. I don't understand the mentality that all the new stuff is better at accomplishing a result. I guess it is effective marketing.

Bows have come along ways since that bow was new. Bows are smoother, easier to shoot, more accurate, etc. I am not saying the current bow will not kill deer, it will just fine. With a faster, more silent bow, your chances go way up.

Not to mention, weight is alot better on the new bows. Easier to hold target & can practice alot more.

I had the Nova from the time i was 12 till i turned 24. After upgrading to a bowtech, i was shocked at how slow the Nova was. If you max out the draw weight, you may hit a target at 50 yards, but good luck killing a deer at even 40 yards. It drops off tremendously and its a little bit loud, when comparing it to newer models.

Like Alxtgr said, for 50 bucks, it will get you by. But it is more of a youth bow.
