I have about 20 stumps ranging from 6 inches up to about 25 inches in diameter that I have got to get rid of. I have a 25 HP tractor / backhoe and have been looking at a Cat 1 3PH PTO driven stump grinder. Anyone have any experience with one? Baumalight IP24 but Wooldland Mills and others sale a similar grinder. About $2500 or $125 a stump. Not including time and fuel and wear and tear on my tractor. I can probably get them taken care of for around $2K but I would have the stump grinder to use for other stumps if I ever needed it.

I am also looking at a ripper blade for my backhoe. Anyone have any experience with one of these? I have dug stumps up with a 25 HP back hoe before (not my current tractor) and it is possible if you have plenty of time (I do) but the ripper blade looks like it will pull a 6-8 inch stump out of the ground with a 25 hp backhoe about as fast as you can get set up to do it. I can get the blade, quick connect, thumb and 6 inch trenching bucket for about $1500. Anyone had any experience with a backhoe ripper blade on a 25 HP machine?

Stump grinders just look like they would be hard on a tractor.

Never used one, just looks like some hard wear.

I agree. They claim it can be ran at 540 RPM which is idle speed form my tractor but it looks like if you push it just a little it would put a lot of stress on the hitch and hydraulics. The backhoe certainly does.....It would be very easy to tear a compact tractor up almost catastrophically with a backhoe attachment I think....I use mine VERY slowly....

ive looked into them...been told over and over i'd be better off renting a stump grinder as needed. same as a wood chipper. 20hp at the PTO isnt going to run a chipper or grinder big enough to make the job doable without killing yourself and/or the tractor

You can rent a decent sized excavator for under $1000/ day. Maybe find a weekend deal. I get what you are saying about having it around, it just doesn't seem like something you would use all that often.

Have you looked into buying a used stump grinder? I bet you could find a pretty good sized used machine for $1500-2000.

You know I haven't. I'm kind of shocked by that oversite LOL...its my normal go to fix....if I need a tool I normally don't really care what it costs I will try to find it used with the idea I will sale it for about what I have in it when I am done with it....never even thought about it this time around though for some reason. This is exactly why I currently have a backhoe and sawmill LOL...thanks for slapping me upside the head!

You are pretty spot on. I looke at marketplace and around $8-$10K and they do indeed look pretty rough. That said I have always been of the opinion that even though I ain't the smartest person in the world I can usually find someone just slightly less smart than me....if I pay $10k for one most likely some other moron will come along and pay $10K for it when I am done with it....and if I tear it up I can probably fix anything that goes wrong. May be a pretty solid backup.

I am leaning that way....if it were only the small ones I can just dig them up....takes a lot of time and diesel fuel but what's time to a hog as they say....but I have a couple that are close to 24 inches in diameter and while I know I could eventually dig them out with the backhoe without doing much if any damage to it it will take a LOT of time and will be a massive hole that I then have to leverage the root ball out of with a 25 HP tractor. I can do it with some creative use of snatch blocks but I don't really like taking those kinds of risks....

Yep have a Baumalight side to side grinder for my 75hp tractor. Haven’t had one mechanical nor structure issue with tractor yet related to grinder usage.

Like a lot of things it goes back to the human running that piece of equipment.

So I am assuming slow and easy and let the teeth do the work and not try to bull your way through it? Your tractor is 3 times the size of mine but I have watched a bunch of videos and they seem to do OK with a 25 hp tractor if the operator ain't trying to destroy the tractor and grinder...

I have a woodland mills pot stump grinder and it’s been awesome. Have probably ground 50+ stumps and am still in the first set of teeth. I would say a hydrostatic tractor is a must. Just take small bites saw two inches or so at a time and barely crawl. It will grind about 10-12” below grade. Small pine stumps say 12” diameter it eats like butter and will be done in minutes. Did a massive water oak stumps and it took about an hour but it was probably 3’ diameter and they had cut it pretty high off the ground. Well worth the $2500 if you have a bunch of stumps to grind

Eta: I’m running it off a Kubota L4701 HST

Yes
Slow and easy let the equipment dictate how fast you can go. Being heavy handed in this case isn’t wise.

I rented a mini ex recently and ripped out about 15 root balls from 6" in diameter to 15" had a couple of cedars that were bigger trunks at the ground. Took me a day and a half to get them out then used the front load tractor to level the ground back off. Also trenched 150' of ground to relocate the septic sprayers to get them out of the way for the shop I'm starting.

I like the WM models....I should have pulled the trigger when they were offering free shipping LOL. I have a WM HM122 Sawmill and in its capacity it does a helluva a job. These are all SYP stumps so they should be farily easy to grind.
